Cognitive behavioural therapy is not easy, and I certainly have struggled with it, but if your son can persevere it does help. Antidepressants also help a lot. I haven't tried hypnotherapy and have never heard of it as effective for OCD and I should be careful about the expense of therapies that have no scientific studies behind them to say they work. I always suggest self-help books like Overcoming OCD which is a particularly good one. Also try The OCD Workbook. I know it is hard, as having OCD just makes you want relief from it, but don't waste your money on things that promise a 'cure' but are unlikely to deliver.

Hi there, I am new to this site too and I am here because I obsessively pick at my skin and have just this minute found out to my surprise that it is linked to OCD.

The reason that I am surprised is that my husband has "real" OCD and I am in somewhat of a feeling of denial right now.

I just wanted to convey to you as a parent and carer just how complicated and individual the symptoms of OCD are. It really is much more involved than just washing as you may now becoming aware of.

My husband and I are very close and I have been involved in many appointments with therapies and psychiatrists that will probably be ongoing forever. Because it doesn't just stop in my experience. It just seems to be part of who we are, our characters. It just is.

That isn't to say that things can't be helped and it's all doom and gloom because it isn't.

I just wanted to say to you that while hypnosis may be fine with an individual of sound mind, that might not be the case of someone with OCD.

I do believe that I have suggested this to my husband a few years back and my understanding of his personal feelings about it was that they might not be who they say they are or not be qualified or good enough to perform hypnosis.

He may fear that they could do something while under the influence of hypnosis and that would be enough to trigger the never ending circle of ruminating thoughts and more anxiety and depression. They are all usually present along with the OCD.

Hypnosis may work for your son although an in-depth conversation with him without him being railroaded into it to please you because he will know you want him to get better. I know that may sound a little bit harsh but it is so complicated. I am not meaning to hurt or upset you.

Ultimately it must be his choice for alternate therapy. He must be comfortable with it.

Both my husband and I have been prescribed Citalopram recently having changed from Sertraline. I thought I only had depression and anxiety until today.

I take 40mg a night because it makes me too sleepy if I take it during the morning or day but that is my personal adult choice.

My husband takes a lower dose of 20mg a day and has had a bad day where he has been triggered by a tanker lorry to do with thoughts of contamination and it has upset him greatly.

Then there is me with my skin picking which I haven't done for years but I also have adult acne. It's a bit of a vicious circle.

As we have both been triggered while taking Citalopram I am wondering if this particular anti-depressant might not be quite suitable.

In conclusion, I am going to have to pluck up courage from somewhere to go out of my house and see my G.P to ask him for help and advice about what to do and if I should change to a different one.

I personally feel that the sertraline might have been better for me.

I would advise you to make an appointment with your son's psychotherapist whom he should be under - or if not his G.P and get him a referral to a psychotherapist to discuss tablets and therapies available.

Also, be prepared for a long wait for any service because they seem to be very, very slow.

I really hope my reply has helped you in some way.

If I can be of any further assistance to you please just reply to this because we are a family that lives with OCD every day and night.

Best wishes to you.

Andi.
