Hi

I use Voltarol for inflamed knees and ankle which works for me very well. As Pat says though, only take one anti inflamm. so I dont take my Naproxen if I rub the Voltarol on - you can buy it over the counter and can use 3 times a day. My foot dr. recommended it when my achilles was badly inflamed and it helped me a lot.

I find voltarol the best of all for me as some of the others have heat in them where as voltarol has a cooling effect. I also take paracetamol as a top up when needed as they are safer although too many can cause liver problems but for a top i prefer them.

I was prescribed Capsaicin cream by my GP a couple of years back when my knees were very very painful and swollen but it has chili or cayenne in it so you have be careful. There is an article about it on the ostea arthritis website which I will try find but I can never link any thing from the iPad so will just have to tell you the web address. I got this on prescription. It think you may be able to get now over the counter. Have to be careful though as it can irritate but strangely enough I can't eat chili/peppers etc without have a bad joint reaction but this didn't have any adverse effect when applied to my knees. It did work as a painkiller. I would ask your GP if ok to take anyhow even if it is available now without prescription. Be back soon with the website details.

Dr. did not advise capsaicin cream for me as I am 74 and the skin on my legs is very thin and fragile, she was afraid it might cause irritation, but agreed it was good otherwise.

Thank you

I tried this and it didn't really have any effect. The heat might distract you from the pain. But maybe it works with some people. You have to be careful to wash your hands afterwards and be careful of touching your eyes

Hi

I have movelat cream for my joints and sciatica it works very well, use 4times aday.

I take co-codamol, tramadol, naproxin, gabapentin and amitriptyline (at night) and can still use the cream. I would ask your gp about it.

Hope it helps, take care.

Glad you got your cream,

I use a spare sock to apply it with so it's softer to massage it in with then cover area with a fleece cover (I have snuggle blanket) it warms skin very quick and is lightweight.

When you've been out use ice pack to reduce swelling first for 20 minutes, then if you're still in pain once your knees has warmed up again then use your cream, you will get pain relief for longer.

I started seeing a chiropractor a year ago for sciatica and found I had fallen arch in right foot and the twist of my body agrivated my knees, my treatment between visits is as above.

Hope it helps you, take care

Sorry Siskin you couldn't use the Capsaicin but as has been said it does work. My knees are quite tough, skin wise!
