Congratulations! Lovely pic of Bob too.

I'm prescribed amitriptyline as a muscle relaxant/neurological pain relief & yes, it can aid sleep. What I find though, contrary to the link, is that it's good sleep. By that I mean restful not sedated. Anyhow, it works for me, though timing in the early weeks of taking my evening dose in particular was a tad tricky. Too early & I fell asleep in the chair, too late & I was groggy in the morning. Adding to that my morning dose & it was like walking through treacle all morning. All's well now as I’ve been taking it a good few years but thought I’d share my experience for anyone newly started on amitriptyline.

I agree about the restful sleep. I once fell asleep in the chair with a glass of wine in my hand. Thank goodness it was white, otherwise the chair would have been ruined.

Happy anniversary to you and Bob. I hope you are feeling better than you have been recently.Thank you for the link.

I have been taking Amitriptyline for about four years, I have tried to come off it, but end up not being able to get to sleep, or not sleeping due to pain in my legs.

I go to bed late, but sleep late in the morning as well. I would be interested to hear everybody else's experience with it.

Morning everyone, Yes it is our Kags on here. She lives in Nuneaton close to me. We have met once then due to her broken femur we have been unable to meet since, but we have emailed every day and i mean every day since. She has been a great support to me during some dark days and we have also had some fun times, like hair we have a good laugh about it. She knows things others don't she is that good a friend. Amitryptiline i have spoken to my dr and he has agreed i should come of it and i have to wean myself of them over a two week period. As he has said i am on a lot of drugs he thinks i should try and come off some of them. That should be interesting to say the least.. xxxxxx

Congratulations to you and Bob - it’s a lovely photo of him. I’ve been on 30mg of amitriptyline at night for several years and it works for me. I dread my annual medication review coming round because I’m on 20 different meds and am dreading being taken off any!

Interesting. But as a long-term insomniac, I can attest to the sedative effect of amitriptyline at 20mg. This Sleepstation post is obviously pushing their own product and doesn't consider the needs of people with other long-term conditions such as CFS, autoimmune disorders etc. I agree that sedation is not ideal, isn't "true" sleep, and has some unfortunate side effects, but if it gives me a guaranteed all-night sleep, every night, when I know I have tried absolutely everything else for sleep, then I'll take it!

Happy Anniversary both! Lovely picture! I was on Amitriptyline for sciatic pain a couple of years ago. Plus the rheumatologist told me to start taking it again for pain but I really don’t like it. I wake many times on the night with no moisture in my mouth whatsoever. It gave me very vivid dreams too. I’ve not taken it for quite a while now. Xx

I’ve used amitriptyline since 2011 when I first went into a severe flare in my AS although it wasn’t diagnosed at that time. I started on 10mg, and now take 25mg although am allowed to go to 50mg if required. I don’t know of anyone prescribed it purely for sleep, it’s usually for pain relief with the bonus of helping sleep. I wear a Fitbit to bed that records the different sleep stages, and am always at the upper range of what REM sleep is expected. I’ve tried every 6 months or so tapering off, but the pain and tenderness of the muscles intensifies quite quickly. Over many of these years I worked as a ward sister on a busy orthopaedic ward, and can honestly say it’s never affected my ability at work, or caused issues concentrating. I was also on very high doses of Pregabalin at the time, and the pain nurse who visited patients on my ward was astounded I could function so well.

I take my amitriptyline about 8:30pm, and generally don’t go to bed till 1am. I only struggle if I’ve taken the higher 50mg dose, then I can be found dosing in my armchair, often with a glass in my hand 😂. I think this company are trying to push their own product, but as I don’t have the lack of REM sleep and it helps the pains, I’m happy to continue 🤪👍

What a lovely photo Sylvi and congratulations on your wedding anniversary 💕I was given Amitriptyline for my IBS, but I can’t take it as it gives a terrible ‘hangover’ feel the next day 🤔

Well what a varied amount of replies to this post of mine. I was on it a long while ago and was taken off some years ago and this time it has affected me differently. Anyway i am coming off it now slowly and to be honest the night i don't take it i feel better the next day and can do a bit more. I am also on Pregablin and if i miss a dose boy i do know it. I have enough painkillers in the house to sink a ship so i won't miss this one so much.xxxx

Thanks for sharing Sylvi. I feel very conflicted about Amitriptyline. I have been prescribed 10mg daily (20mg knocked me for six). I tend to only take it if I’ve had a build up of bad sleep nights but rheumatologist says I need it every day to benefit from the ‘cumulative effect’. It just doesn’t sit right with me that my sleep needs to be medicated !

LinaM profile image
LinaM in reply togirli1111

That’s the same with me … I only take one 10mg when I’m absolutely desperate for sleep and I’m in a horrible flare as the pain in my hands keeps me awake. I monitor my sleep with a smart watch and it is clear that I get zero deep sleep with Amitriptyline … but many hours of light sleep, do I would concur with the article . Still …. Wouldn’t want yo be without it !

Happy anniversary and many congratulations! I was prescribed 25mg amitryptyline in 2016 just before diagnosis to help me sleep and it helps. Unfortunately, the dry mouth and horrible breath are side effects I wouldn't miss. I have tried to do without but some sleep is better than none.

I took the Amitriptyline at 8.30pm and i have had a dreadful nights sleep.. Been down here since 5am. So taking it earlier didn't seem to work for me, So tomorrow night i will try again at 10pm and see how that works, Watch this space. xxxxx
