No. I knew from when I started it in 2016 that it might have some nasty unwanted effects. But so does RD.

I only stopped when told by Rheumatologist as we were moving away from MTX and HCQ to something that might work better for me.

The doses that people with coronavirus are being given are much much higher than for RA. Something like 600mg twice a day, rather than 200mg. So that is more likely to cause dangerous side effects. At the doses we are on side effects (once over the initial acclimatisation) are rare.

No. We're very well-monitored and our rheumy teams would tell us if there were any issues.

No. My doctor prescribes my meds not the media.

I can't stand their scare tactics, especially when then can't even pronounce the medications properly.

No keep taking the meds, uncontrolled RA is much worse and side effects of hydroxy or any ra drug are monitored.

It is only dangerous when it is not prescribed by a doctor....all advice is to continue all our R.A. meds unless advised to stop by our doctors.

I’m sure many people here are thriving whilst taking it.

No, I’ve been on it 30 years and have had no problems. Don’t stop taking it unless your rheumy advises it, flaring would not be good for you either.

Definitely not. I have my eyes tested before I started and I have a regular eye tests and scans of my eyes and you will be well monitored while you are taking it.

People being treated for coronavirus were being given massive amounts of it and they were terribly ill in the first place.

As I understand it, it's a risk for people with heart disease and is definitely not something people should be buying off the internet and using to treat themselves, but we are constantly being checked for side-effects and HCQ is pretty safe when prescribed and monitored by experts. Possibly the side-effects are being publicised to deter people from just swallowing it off their own bat hoping it will protect them from covid-19.

Don't stop taking it without discussing with your Consultant. I was taken off it last year as it has caused permanent damage to my Retina, Toxic Retinitis. All medications have serious side effects, again I was just probably unlucky.
