I believe Boron is the stuff that is used to stop a nuclear reaction not sure I'd swallow that. And Borex isn't that the stuff used to whiten washing . I'm not sure just seem to recall those bits from reading way back. Really if the NHS thought this worked would they spend millions on medications ? But good luck to you if your going to give it a go.

Yep..I'm old enough to remember my grandmother having boxes of Borax powder...together with bars of yellow soap to use on wash day ...long before washing machines were standard in most houses.

I did, for about 6m. Felt no difference. Some of us may have a deficiency, and it has been shown to be good for bones. If you live in an area where there is enough boron in the soil, I think you get what you need. Know that many swear by its positive effects. Doesn't hurt to try😊

Your positivity is very much appreciated Simba. I am well and taking very little drugs for RA now 😄

6 meters of felt n borax isn’t gonna help no one. the deficiency we all have is good information and a full on caring attitude n no bullshit. Xxx

There was a post on this in the Pain Concern forum a week or so ago - my understanding is it’s a type of washing powder in the US, and not really something I’d consider putting in my mouth...😱😱. And just like all these other so-called ‘cures’ for RA, I’m sure the medical profession would have got us all on it by now if there was any scientific basis to the story.

AgedCrone profile image
AgedCrone in reply to Soreknees2016

Exactly.....the NHS must coordinate with drug companies looking for something to replace all the expensive drugs they supply us with....& something like Borax which has been around for over at least a hundred

years must surely have been looked at & discarded as a no go! I think it it has bleach like qualities.

As RA is now considered incurable by most of the medical profession, I think it is going to be something like the unlikely appearance of Penicillin's curative properties that will one day shake up AI diseases.

Let's hope it's soon.

Strangely, the post in Pain Concern forum has disappeared, but from what I remember, the OP was dissolving a teaspoon of a proprietary brand of household borax in water and drinking it. That sounds just plain daft - and very dangerous - to me, and is probably why the post has been taken down, given what I have now read of the various uses of this substance.

Hi SK.....I long ago decided the research chemists do an excellent job on AI drugs & I have better things to do than trying to best them....like jetting off to the sunshine & reading all the best sellers on a beach.

Mind you some people have really odd ideas they are convinced are essential to their well being

A friend in the US takes a tea spoon of hydrogen peroxide in water every morning...has done for years. She's 80+ now...so maybe she has a point?

But I won't be trying it any time soon......& I don't recommend that anyone else should!

LOL - I think I would give that one a miss too!

I think the majority of us welcome any source of information in the interest of a cure or better management of RA.

As highlighted lots recently on here, no one knows everything. It's always good to keep an open mind. I haven't heard of borax but will research with interest.

Thanks for posting.

I know it has helped many but I felt no difference. Not one of my main supplements.

seams like everybody says the same thing-did nothing for me,but heard it worked for other people.

Simba1992 profile image

There seems to be some kind of scientific evidence of its benefits so not a supplement to discard right off.

You've just taken me back to my childhood. I'd remembered my Nan was prescribed Brufen & applied a smelly ointment to her joints but I now remember a box of borax she kept on the kitchen shelf. She put a little in a large glass of water & drank it.

I'm not sure it could be considered a cure given there is no cure for RD, certainly 50 plus years ago it didn't cure my Nan, she had very deformed fingers & toe joints, others too possibly but I've no way of knowing as they'd be covered up. I do remember though seeing her knees were very swollen & red on the odd occasion her skirt/dress rose up. I would think if it was so effective it would have been made into easy to take tablets or capsules (unless it is, I haven't researched it), or recommended by our Rheumy's in a similar way to them recommending supplements that help, that is if it's not contraindicated with the ones we take.

Sorry I can't be of more help but thanks for the trip down memory lane, I can see my Nan's kitchen so clearly in my mind's eye.

Amazing what they used years ago. My granny too had allsorts of stuff for this and that. Her sister had Rheumatoid and also had deformed hands and feet. I have no doubt they tried everything in those days. I remember my granny putting a drop of milk on a bit bread as a poultice to draw a boil 😨. I loved her ways! :)

Sorry to tell you but as of now RA sadly has no cure.

But don't despair ....many of us live really good lives for many years with RA.

You have to be postive & try not to get too despondent when a drug doesn't work.....just hope that the next one does.

Incidentally I wouldn't try any of these "cures " you read about until you run them by at least your Rheumy nurse....they might make you really poorly.

Simba1992 profile image
Simba1992 in reply to AgedCrone

There are supplements that support your body and work against the bad effects of meds. I can only see these as something positive. They do not cure but make your quality of life better.

AgedCrone profile image
AgedCrone in reply to Simba1992

Hi Simba ....My reply was to Dersert1030 whose question asked had anyone tried Borox as a "cure"...it somehow winged its way to you.

Until there is a cure ..... newly diagnosed people should concentrate on getting comfortable on proven clinical advice, & maybe then try out the various supplements you find so helpful.

You never know what may be lurking in a normally innocuous substance that could cause real harm to somebody ...but a quick word with a clinician who has full knowledge of a person's condition is all it takes to make sure no harm is done.

Methotrexate, Hydroxychloroquine, Leflunomide were all explained to me by a Senior Rheumy nurse when I was newly diagnosed. I became very unwell on these drugs. Very sick, covered in a body rash and most importantly, I got permanent joint damage!

I have done so much better eating healthy food.

In the absence of a cure I do what feels best for me and my quality of life.

I am on MTX, sulfasalazine, prednizone (to be eliminated in the next couple of months) and those supplements my Internist told me to get. The only side effect from these - that are obvious to me - hair loss, mouth sores twice. So different for every person right? These drugs do not cause joint damage; the RA does. Within 2 months I had permanent damage in my left foot and my right hand. That was before my diagnosis.

Define 'so much better'. Are you on any medication at all?😮

Shalf profile image
Shalf in reply to Nanna71

Hello Nanna,

I have ammended my post to make it clearer. The Dmards didn't work but I was told to stay on them consequently inflammation was attacking my joints particularly my hand where there is damage.

I am on Baracitinib 4mg normally taken every day but now every other day as my bloods are good and inflammation is calm. I eat lots of berries and fresh veg and salmon. Feeling better RA wise but my muscles ( Fibro) aren't feeling too good. Lifestyle changes in foods I eat, exercise I do and more rest have made me so much better I believe than I was before.

Just in case anybody is tempted to try Borax......

it is described as a High Quality Laundry Booster, a cleaning product, an insecticide & a Slime Activator!

Sorry if any one has actually tried it!

I thought it was a cleaning product lol

I’m not known to be sceptical and will try anything. I read the link to the post about Boron and part of it stood out. The author said that Boron is found in the Dead Sea (as are lots of other minerals), and the incidence of people with RA that visit the Dead Sea regularly is very low and that it can be cured or eased there too.

Before we all hot foot it to Israel, I’d like to add, that I used to live in Israel and often visited the Dead Sea and hey, I have moderate to severe RA. So......for me, the whole article is discredited. Sorry.

Simba1992 profile image
Simba1992 in reply to HappykindaGal

There is a world map on what areas have too little boron. If you live in an area where not enough in soil then it may be an idea to supplement with. And besides it does support many good things in our bodies😊

I can't speak for RA directly, but borax seems to be a decent anti-inflammatory and safe in low doses.

I've been taking 1/16 tsp borax power (20mule) in water daily for 3 years, and have seen the following:

- dramatically reduces backpain and stiffness (spent a month sleeping on a fold-out sofa with little problem) .

- finger and knee joints feel a better too.

- teeth feel much better. (I had some tooth looseness and problems with dentine decaying fast that seemed to go away after I started the therapy.)

- better feeling bones.

- I had regular "heart pressure" that gradually went away after starting. (-Think- the anti-inflammatory properties of borax helped clear my arteries.)

- stopped getting cold-sores. (Borax/boron inhibit herpes-class viruses, apparently.)

I'd be careful if you have kidney problems, but otherwise, it is worth trying.
