Hi, I've taken Amitriptyline for years, for nerve pain and it's been very effective. It's the one drug that I panic about running out as it controls the pains in my neck well. Initially I had a dry mouth and after taking and became very sleepy quickly, but neither happen now. I've had friends in the past that have stopped using it as they have experienced a hangover effect the next day and weight gain. I'm on 30mg a night. Hope they have the desired effect for you. Take care. Candy

I took it for a while, but it gave me headaches from hell, and really numb toes. Didn't do much for the pain, though helped a bit with sleep.

Did you by any chance drop them into your shoes?

I started on 5 mg years ago but am now on 30 mg. I wake up with a dry mouth and need a strong coffee to get over the grogginess but then I'm fine.

Yes I did take it years ago and I gain weight so quickly and got very agitated. It is best to look at the side effects. I stopped it myself as the doctor wanted me to stay on it. I could not as I have Osteo in both knees.

Hiya Valletta. Was it because of the weight gain & extra strain on your knees you'd to stop ami or was it some other reason you were given?

Because I gaining weight It was putting extra strain on my knees causing more pain. As it is I am already experiencing high level of pain which I have been suffering for thirteen years. I got Gout, Osteo and RA. I am seeing a specialist next week to discuss stem cells. I also got peptic ulcer and H/hernia. I am trying to get of Tramidol but it is something I need to discuss with my specialist after the stem cells. I feel so exhausted from all the pain.

I wish you well. xxx

I thought that might be the case. It's a no win really isn't it? Have you discussed this with your GP or been referred to a Pain Clinic to discuss your OA pain at all, even if only for the interim? My OA pain got to the point it was no longer manageable with conservative methods & I didn't want to go on tramadol or the other meds my GP considered suitable, I was willing to try a transdermal pain relief patch though (Butrans/Butec). It's been successful for me though I appreciate they're not for everyone but I know how exhausted you must feel having been there. Something to discuss maybe?

Oh yes I was referred to pain management at our North shore hospital. Doctors told me that they not understand pain. All they can do is give medicine. I do not believe that they do not understand pain. I do understand to why they prescribe medicine. They belief that most of the long term pain we suffer from is coming from our brain. In my case my inflammation level is very high. I am not seeing the doctor anymore as after twelve years of spending all this money nothing has change. I am a pensioner so $45 every time I see the doctor plus $30 to $50 is becoming very costly. This is why I decided now to investigate the stem cell. To tell you the truth I cannot wait until Tuesday to see if I am a candidate. It is going to be costly I know but I cannot live like this anymore. Hardly any sleep and no quality of life. Take care xxx

I am on 10mg when needed. I have found it does not work very well. My rheumatologist has said to play the dosing a little to find the correct amount for me. He said if I wake feeling hungover then i took too much.

I have found that 30mg is too high and 20 is too low. I do not sleep well on it as I have very weird and animated dreams. If I take tizanadine i sleep much better. It is a muscle relaxer usually for MS patients. It is a fast acting short duration drug.

Used to take it regularly but only as required now. I used to feel really groggy in the morning, but taking it at least 2 hours before I went to bed helped a bit. For me it was a wonder drug, and was the only thing that helped me get a bit of a sleep when I was in the middle of my flare.

Hiya Sam. I've been taking amitriptyline a few years now & started off on 10mg evening only. I've reached the most helpful dose for me, 25mg morning & 50mg evening, it's prescribed as a muscle relaxant. I was advised to play around with the timing of taking it, at night particularly because, as I found out, take it too early & I fall asleep in the chair, too late & I'm groggy in the morning. The only side effects I have are dry mouth & falling asleep recliner if I take it too early in the evening, you're usually guaranteed a good nights sleep once you've got your optimum dose right. So, I don't take it at 8pm with my other evening meds, I take it at around 10pm & even then can still find myself waking in the recliner at times! Last night for example, I stumbled down to bed at 3.40am but I was particularly tired as I'd been waxing floor tiles so was pooped. So timing when you take it can be a bit hit & miss initially, & it can depend on how tired you are too!

Hi Sam,I'm taking them! Can't say I've noticed anything dramatic. They are to help me sleep although some nights I'm up nearly all night with restless legs.I take 12 ropinirole a day for that!

Quinine is the best for restless legs and yes it does work, either get the quinine from Your gp or you can find it in some tonic waters and another way that I use is straight to bed stretched out everywhere lol and sleep no hanky pinky, lol. Go to your doctor.

I take 30 mg Amitriptyline at night and have done for a long time. I don't have any side effects now, but when I first started taking them I fell into a very deep sleep within about ten minutes of getting into bed.

My daughter took that stuff ans she had a dream that she died and was talking with Jesus. This was her last wild dream and it shook her so hard, she still wonders to this day if she actually died in her sleep! Her dreams were all either scary or just way-out weird. She went on a different drug for her depression after that final dream.

Hello

I've been taking amitryptilin for about 2.5 years started due to shingle nerve pain before RA diagnosis. Started with 10mg at night now taking 25mg I find it can make me a little groggy the next day. But it helps me sleep have tried to come off it but can't sleep so very tired during the day.

I have had it for nerve pain, but it didn't suit me as well as Gabapentin, which is a best friend to me! I was told that either one or the other would suit me and that is what I found. I am turned 70 yrs of age and my doctor said that he is happy for me to be on it for the rest of my life.
