11 years old with Gross hematuria but no other symptoms

Hi everyone! My 11 years old girl has been have gross hematuria for more than 2 weeks now. She has no other symptoms(no pain, no fever, blood pressure normal). Low potassium and high calcium on her blood result. And there was some protein(1+) in her urine. The urine color is light pink or orange right now, and sometimes we can see really tiny clots in it. We did ultrasound and CT, the urologist ruled out the kidney stone as the major cause of her hematuria. Now, we are waiting to see a pediatric nephrologist. It’s very frustrating as the days pass by. I’m just wondering if anyone had experienced something similar before. Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you!

The hardest part is not knowing what is causing an issue. Have they done lab work/nephritic panel? My son had blood and protein in his urine and it was the odd numbers that kept coming back, leading to more tests to land him a biopsy then his diagnosis. The process is grueling! Hang in there! Praying it’s nothing!!!

Thank you so much! She had CMP, CBC and Complement Comp C3C4 so far. Everything’s normal except low potassium and high calcium. All these tests were ordered by her pediatrician. I’m going to ask him if he could order the nephritic panel while we waiting for the nephrologist. I hope your son doing better now. May I ask if he had microhematuria or gross hematuria, for how long? How’s his recovery after diagnosis?

We’ve been focusing on urology for the past two weeks. But the urologist suggested us to see nephrologist last Friday after reviewing my daughter’s CT scan. I’m just so worried that things will get worse during this long waiting.

Hi there!

When do you see the nephrologist? Did the urologist make any comments on the imaging results?

Don’t panic. Just see if she can see that nephrologist this week. There are so many possible causes; as I learn more, the more I understand how complex the fields of urology/nephrology are. But also rapidly advancing.

Keep us posted; rooting for you and DD!

Thank you for your support. The earliest appointment is next Monday. I just learned that she might have IBD from the CT report. I’m taking her to see peds GI on Wednesday.

The CT report mentioned there’s a punostate nonobstructing stone in the upper pole in the right kidney. No hydronephrosis. The urologist think the stone is too small to be the main cause of her gross hematuria for this long. She suggested us to see the nephrologist and GI doctor first.
