Who is responsible for telling my doctor to stop a particular drug as it is too expensive. It was prescribed by a hospital consultant?

Is it the CCG or another layer above that?

I think you need more information here. As far as I know, NICE has the ability to decide if a drug is not cost effective. There are GPs who are reluctant to prescribe some drugs (e.g. some sleeping tablets) so patients may need to go back to their consultants for repeat prescriptions. My mother in law has had this experience. I suggest that as a course of action: contact your consultant and explain the situation and ask for a repeat prescription. Then think about chaining your GP. Thanks. Two yrs ago It took three months to get an initial reply from pain management then another three waiting for the consultation! I run out of drugs next week!

.this may well be out of the GPs hands and changing to another will not solve the problem. Each health commission have a prescribing advisory group who develop a local prescribing formulary. If the drug recommended by a consultant is not on the list then GPs will have difficulty prescribing it.

NICE governs drugs in the UK. If you dont like thje drug you tell the doc. Always ask questions as its your bosy

It is the local CCG (Clinical Commissioning Group). However, it maybe that the reason is that a generic drug is available that does the same job, at significantly less cost. The CCG are saying use that rather than the more expensive 'still in patent' drug. Which is common sense why pay more for the same.

The fact that it was prescribed by the Hospital Consultant merely shows that they both need to get on the same page and stop confusing the patient.

NICE keep an eye on the cost o medications, The local Health Authority can have a great say
