New pregnancy - previously had a miscarriage

I lost my first child on 5th March at 11w2d. I found out on Monday that I am pregnant again! I am 4w6d today. I am so excited but terrified I will lose this baby like I lost the last one. I have filled in my booking form for the midwife and waiting for a call from her for my booking appointment.

Does anyone know if the NHS provide an early pregnancy scan if you've had a previous miscarriage or do bloods early?

I had neither a scan nor bloods taken whilst I was pregnant before - I was due to have them the week after I lost the baby. I am wondering if it's worth me seeking a private scan in 2 weeks to check on things? Anyone been through this? Thoughts please xx

Hi Shem008! Congratulations on your lovely news! Deep breaths and enjoy this time, I know how difficult it is but this is such a special time for you and your lovely rainbow baby 🙂 I'm currently 31 weeks now with my rainbow baby and it's taken me awhile to relax and enjoy it but it's so worth it. After my miscarriage last year, my early pregnancy unit told me to call them when I thought I was 7 weeks and they would give me an early scan to see how the baby was growing. I was given 3 scans before I was 12 weeks and it was so reassuring, I would give the early pregnancy unit a call when you're around 7 weeks and explain what happened with your last pregnancy as generally they do give you scans. Saves spending money on a private scan. So happy to hear your lovely news!! Xxx

Thank you for your reply 😊 I really hope they do give me an early scan although I would be happy to pay for one if they didn't. I definitely need the reassurance this time - I had no idea anything was wrong last time until I started bleeding. I'm really hoping this baby sticks! Congratulations on our rainbow! I hope the rest of your pregnancy goes well! Xx

I don't think the pregnant lady who posted will have problems with any of these things! Maybe your advertisement of your products would be best placed elsewhere!!

I know exactly how u feel same happened to me last year in April I went for my 12 week scan only to be told baby had no heartbeat. I had erpc operation as things weren't happening naturally. 3 months later I was pregnant again and worried so much through entire 9 months I barely enjoyed it. I managed to get a early scan I was worried sick that at 8 weeks my pregnancy symptoms had disappeared (like they did In first pregnancy-put to back of my mind at the time, as symptoms come and go) doctor sent me for early scan, all was fine. Now daughter sat her with me (her due date, was exactly a year after op-but she was late).

I suppose it all depends on areas but down her in south west, they don't normally provide early scan after 1 miscarriage. Paying for a scan is expensive, but if it puts ur mind at risk u should do it.

I nearly paid for one but as the biggest risk is before 12 weeks it would of been harder for me to see baby with heartbeat say at 7 weeks then go to 12 weeks NHS scan to see that it had gone, this is what would of happened first time round as baby died at 10 weeks 4 days. (Hope this bit makes sense)!

I have had a couple of friends that had a miscarriage with first babies and now both friends have healthy babies.

Relax if u can, don't smoke or drink, take vitamins and look after ur self-I am sure all will go fine this time!

Oh and congrats on ur news, best wishes Rebecca xxx

Thanks Rebecca. I don't smoke and had reduced the amount I drank as soon as we started trying last year so I'd practically given up anyway. I'm sorry for your loss. I never saw my first baby on a scan - just a sac with a hole in 😟 - so I think I definitely want an early scan this time. I have looked into private scans if I'm unable to get one on the NHS in Wales and there's a place nearby. I have a couple of friends who have gone on to have healthy pregnancies after miscarriages too. I know they'll be there for me when I'm ready to share the news but until then I'm just a bit anxious. Can't wait for my first midwife appointment to be honest. Thanks for your kind words. I'm hoping I can relax into this pregnancy but only time will tell xxx

Hi,

Best wishes to you on your pregnancy.

Please dont worry everything will be alright. They will allow you for early scan only if you detect any problem such as bleeding. I have had early scan at 8 weeks as i had spot bleeding. By god's grace everything went well.

Do take care. Wish you all healthy and happy pregnancy...
