i have bad migraine for 26 years, but the pain behind my right eye makes me want to take my eye out, could their be another cause for the pain
Hi there
Sorry to hear you are suffering so much.
Book yourself into see a migraine specialist at the NMC and perhaps also an optician to make sure your eye is healthy.
Some types of migraines cause pain around and behind the eye, getting a correct diagnosis will allow you access to the right treatments.
I hope you will feel better soon.

Hi Cecila
I've had a painful left eye for years. I've also had chronic facial pain on that side and thought the two were related. I've been told that my eye problem is a result of (a)hayfever (what, even in the winter?) (b)a one-off bit of grit that got in my eye (so how come it's carried on being a problem for years?) & (c) a lump on my eyelid causing irritation (had lump removed and it's still a problem). And also that it could be a response to the facial pain.
Finally got an assessment by an eye specialist who said it was "probably migraine". This makes the most sense to me, given that during the aura my eye goes blood shot and starts to get sore, and it all builds up from there.
It's worth getting your eye checked out anyway though. None of the eye specialists are concerned so that's good, it's just frustrating that it happens. I have stopped wearing mascara because anything getting in my eye irritates it now, and the only thing that helps the pain is to shut my eye and press something warm over it. I have botox regularly for the facial pain and migraine which helps but it doesn't seem to do much for the eye pain.
I understand about you wanting to take your eye out - there are times when I want to remove my entire head.
Hope things get better for you soon.
I had pain in my eye that sounds like you describe it. I would wake at night from the pain. I was referred to an Eye Specialist and he diagnosed a cyst. It was treated with drops. I have dry eyes as I have Sjogrens Syndrome. This has occurred on a second occasion because of being in a particularly dry atmosphere and not using enough natural tear drops. It could be worth a visit to a consultant to have it checked.
