Hi, My daughter is 17 and is a competitive athlete, training 3-4 times a week and competing nationally.
She has recently experienced a series of bouts of severe abdominal pain in the region of her tummy button and below. This is not related to any monthly cycle or food consumed , as far as we can establish.
The pain causes her to collapse and this has happened repeatedly at school and sometimes at training.
It eases after 30 minutes to an hour.
She has had a very thorough ultrasound scan, examination at A&E, full set of bloods and nothing has been identified as a cause.
We are now on a waiting list to get onto a waiting list to see a consultant and this will not happen any time soon.
She has also had an accompanying headache and nausea on a few occasions.
This is obviously affecting her school work and training. A nursing friend mentioned abdominal migraines to me and it is the only thing that has appeared to be a possibility. I have struggled to find any further information and would welcome any references and thoughts about this.

Sorry to hear that your daughter has been suffering this, our son who is thirty now had abdominal migraines, we weren't sure what was wrong with him at the time , he was slightly younger than your daughter at the time . He use to vomit and have abdominal pains, one time he vomited so much that he had to go to hospital as he had got so dehydrated. He had a few of these episodes and then grew out of them and then went on to have the ordinary migraines.
Our son has suffered since 2nd grade. What has worked for us is 500mg Magnesium Glycinate daily. He also takes Cyproheptadine daily. We make sure he is super hydrated and he keeps his medication on him all the time. Studies have shown that people who have migraines are deficient in Magnesium.
Do you think she has Chronic Vomiting Syndrome (CVS) or Abdominal migraine? CVS is usually the same time every day and has a clear cycle ( sweating, abdominal cramping, GI issues, at the end of this cycle he falls asleep for a long time.
We had every test under the sun and it was all normal.
The good news is I was told he would out grow it when he finishes high school. For us that is end of May 2024.
We have a 504 plan in high school and in also in college. Our son has committed to play Division 1 sports in college. So I know about the workouts and sports games.
thank you for this. She has felt sick but never vomited. It is just very severe pain and school have had to get her into a wheelchair on a few occasions.
The good thing about starting magnesium is that in 3-4 months it "may" help, if it doesn't change the type of magnesium. Make sure she doesn't skip any meals.
Hope this helps. I was also told that if they are migraines they will go to her head and her stomach will stop hurting.
