We are able to prescribe Aimovig and Ajovy here at the National Migraine Centre, however sadly these drugs are not available on the NHS in England yet. Any questions then please give us a call on 020 7251 3322.

They are available at St Thomas’s so I would have thought a centre especially for Migraine would also have access? What’s the difference between Aimovig and Ajovy please? Thank you

We do have access and are able to prescribe the drugs however we are a charity and are not part of the NHS and get no funding from the government, so we do not get the drugs through the NHS, which means patients have to pay privately for them. Aimovig and Ajovy are similar, but work slightly differently. One targets the protein and the other targets the receptor. They are also administered at different dosages.

Thank you for your reply that’s a shame but I understand. How do you know which one is best for you? How much are they per month please? Thank you

It would be best to speak with a headache specialist to determine which one would be best for you. They are around £385 monthly . Feel free to call our receptionist if you have any further questions and they will be able to help you (020 7251 3322).

Thank you but I’m never going to afford that. Just have to put life on hold and lie in a dark room until NICE sort it.

How many do you get a month? Because I believe if they are approved by NICE you will need to fulfill a criteria on the state/amount of your migraines before you are allowed it for free.

Aimovig has been rejected (free via NHS) in England & Wales but it is available free in Scotland (if your migraine is bad enough to qualify). Ajovy will be decided later this year, they are going to meet in October, 2019.

On another note - you may try Flunarizine in the meantime for migraine prophylaxis by asking your doctor. Certainly not as effective as Aimovig or Ajovy - but probably better than Amitriptyline or Propranolol.
