I contracted BM at the end of 2011. It was Oxycillin Resistant Staph. Aureus. The twin to MRSA.

I’m happy to announce that I survived with on an hour or two (at the most) to spear.

I kept all my limbs. I did have about 10 days of constant hallucinations so encephalitis is expected.

It took a long time to recover. I spent a month on home health IV antibiotic thereapy of Vancomiacyn as the drug of choice. Because of the high dosage, it eventually became toxic to my system. My kidneys and liver took a temporary hit.

I’m good now. My central nervous system will never be the same. I have infrequent “bad” days where my thoughts, comprehension and short term memory are scetchy. But that’s ok. I had a very real near death experience and am blessed by God to still be here. I’m functioning I may not be able to work again. But I’m here! I’m ok. There is good hope.

I have the numbness myself and hearing has decreased. I also had hallucinations like traumatic ones I can’t get those out of my head. But yes we are blessed to be alive and god is great

Thank you for replies.

I'm struggling through my recovery, I'm going through very bad depression and only just been prescribed antidepressants. I had BM (SA) in September 2017, with sepsis and hydrocephalus, my family were told 3 times to prepare for the worst. I spent 2 months in hospital, had 2 operations, really bad delusions, IV antibiotics and oral antibiotics for 6wks on discharge. I too came out relatively unscathed and thank God for bringing me through.

I'm still at that stage where every little ailment worries me. I want to stay positive but it's hard.

I had sepsis to I also have to have one surgery and hopefully that will be it but time will tell and yes I try to stay as positive as I can I read up a lot about sepsis and found stories of people that also have that and just with these two conditions combined we are extremely blessed to be alive

My GP thinks I've got labrinthitis now, I've lost my appetite and feel sick when I do eat. I'm worried.

Thank you for your posts. I feel a lot better now, still go through phases of lightheadedness and tiredness, just have to go with the flow and stay positive.

I was the first known person in the UK to have survived SA BM. I was in hospital for two months and was given a very low chance of survival because they didn't know how to treat it. It's a very rare condition and by the time it was diagnosed back then, it was already too late. It was 1990 and I was 23. Luckily I had the best neurologist and was in the best hospital and I survived with all my limbs intact. The emotional side of things kicked in much later. It's now 28 years exactly and I find it harder and harder to think about. My physical problems include fibromyalgia, arthritis, chronic fatigue, severe depression, constant headaches and more besides. Most of my problems are auto immune and I wonder that if I'd never had the meningitis maybe I'd not be falling apart today. Even though it's pretty tough for me now, I'm still so thankful that I survived and that other people are now surviving because of what was learned at the time.. One thing that baffles me, my hearing is super acute now. I am even sensitive to high pitched noises that only animals can hear. I don't know of any other 51 year olds who have such amazing hearing because it's normally in decline with age. Life is so strange sometimes. Congratulations to all of you for getting through this, I'm kind of glad I'm not on my own anymore but in the best way possible!
