Good morning, It may be some time until he is 'back to normal' he will need time and care. There is lots of information about and here is a good place to start. I had it back in 2011 and still have problems. Have a look at my blog, not medical but shows how it is on the long road to recovery. Sorry if it sounds a bit negative but this is a very serious illness and will leave it's mark. bumpyhighway.blogspot.co.uk/

Hi Clancybella.

As Chris says, its impossible to put time scale on things.I had v.m in February and still get memory blanks but its improving and they are becoming less and less. The best advice I could give is to take each day as it comes and small steps forward. Its still very early days in your boyfriends recovery and things will take time .I still have frustrating symptoms like fatigue and headaches and woolly brain sometimes but that doesn't mean life has to be crap, its just different and you learn to manage it and take things slower.

This site is great, have a scroll through old posts, there's a lot of people going through similar situations.

Hi Clancybella! I had bacterial meningitis in 2007 and it has been a long journey. I still have memory problems and do not remember many years from the past. You need to be strong for him. Show him pictures of his family and read to him. My wife and friends read Bible passages, sang songs and also played audio books for me. Play some calm music he liked when he was younger. Remember that music is very powerful and will help the brain heal! It has been a journey for my family and me. I was a guitar instructor at a music conservatory. I do not remember teaching there but I remember the people. I still play classical guitar and read sheet music. Music has very much helped my recovery!

I had aseptic meningitis December of 2012/January 2013 and I still have some headache symptoms from time to time. My case compared to others here on the board was VERY mild. The recovery will depend on how much damage was done to the brain by the virus and where it was done. Very similar to a traumatic brain injury that veterans experience or severe concussion cases. I told my neurologist that I can't believe I was still having headaches and he told me, that the brain takes a long time to heal so the recovery time depends on the severity of the brain damage and where the damage occurred. The neurologist also told me that even though I was fortunate to have a very mild case, the virus is very very nasty and dangerous which would make recovery long for even a mild case. For me, there are many things from the time period that I had meningitis and even during recovery, that are very fuzzy. Good luck and help your boyfriend stay strong.
