Supported Living (Maghull, Liverpool or Southport area) - Woman in her 50’s with Learning Disabilities

Hello! My sister in law (SIL) in her mid 50’s, has mild learning difficulties, which was diagnosed following a bout of meningitis when she was a child.

My mother in law (MIL) is her full time carer, who looks after all of her medication as well as her day to day well being. My MIL is now in her mid 80’s and is struggling terribly with caring for her daughter, plus the worry of what will happen to her daughter if/when my MIL passes.

Myself & my husband are trying to encourage my MIL to find supported living for my SIL in the local area.

Can anyone recommend anywhere in Maghull, Liverpool or somewhere in Southport? My SIL is very sociable and would be ok living in her own flat/apartment - However, she would need someone keeping an eye on her just to make sure she’s remembering to take her medication, or switching off the iron (etc.).

We would like to get my SIL settled somewhere to ensure that my MIL can enjoy her remaining years.

Is there any government support for this kind of thing? Or are there any charities that have properties, where vulnerable adults can be supported when trying to live as independently as they can?

Thank you in advance for any advice that anyone can give.

contact adult social services they can assess her and your mothinlaw as the carer so they can both be supported in the transition and they can also suggest the right home to meet your mother in law’s daughter so the move succeeds. Good luck

Hi Florence_13 , as Jofisher has mentioned, social services would be the best place to start. If you require any further support or advice, please feel free to call our Learning Disability Helpline on 0808 808 1111 or email helpline@mencap.org.uk.

One of our network partners, Mencap Liverpool, may also be able to offer some suggestions in the local area. You can reach them on 0151 707 8582.

Hope that helps.
