Hi afib1, it seems the kidneys control heart rate as well as cleaning the blood as I had extensive tests due to a abnormal heart beat. Long story short, I am on Bisoprolol for non sustained ventricular tachycardia. My heart rate now is always in the 50s and I am grateful as before it was like a galloping horse inside. Not pleasant. So please don't worry, but seek medical advice if your mum is worried.

My GFR is about 40 and has been there for about 5 years. In order to control my blood pressure, I take 5 drugs to maintain it about 125 Systolic. As my blood pressure medication was increased to control my systolic pressure, my pulse rate hit the 50s and lower sometimes. My cardiac doctor put a pacemaker in me to maintain my heart rate to equal to or greater than 60 bpm. Otherwise he said I could possibly pass out while driving my automobile.
