I have musical tinnitus and I read somewhere that one theory is that my brain could sometimes get bored with the silence in my life so it looks for sounds in my memory and recreates them. Much of the tinnitus music I hear, I don't much like now e.g. Old Man River and I thought I'd remind my memory of some songs I still like, e.g. Smoke gets in your eyes. I went over "Smoke...eyes" 3 to 5 times in my mind, and mentally blanked out the tinnitus music. When I stopped, I had silence for a while then back came not Old Man River but Smoke gets in your eyes! So, I tried substituting more songs I like e.g. The Nearness of you and Making Whoopee. (I'm interested in writing comedy and I like hearing Making Whoopee, well, it's a catchy tune). I hear both of them now and this kind of substitution works more often than not. I get more of the music I like and more importantly some control over what I hear.
