Hey Stephanie.

My son went through nearly four years of rehab. One of which was spent in a NHS unit which allegedly dealt with brains, but in reality was an all encompassing unit, and the rest of the time was spent in BIRT units. The first was in Goole, Yorkshire and it was absolutely outstanding. The chap who heads it up has a real passion for what he does and that is reflected in the staff. I can't rate it highly enough. The other was in Cullompton, Exeter. This was also very, very good - a million miles away from the NHS unit, but unfortunately not as good as Goole. Of course the reality of all units is that they are only as good as the team working there and their commitment to their jobs. However, on the whole, I cannot sing BIRT's praise highly enough. The important thing is that with anywhere you are thinking of moving your husband to, check it out for yourself, ask questions and make sure it feels 'right' for you.

Take care and good luck

Hi Stephanie

My partner recently spent six months at the BIRT unit in Cullompton. Like Charlie's nan I can't praise them highly enough. The team he had helping him were wonderful, and his OT in particular couldn't do enough for him.

I wouldn't hesitate in recommending them, but of course every case is different and I agree you should visit and make sure it feels right for you both.

Take care

My daughter spent time at Daniel Yorath House in Leeds and it was excellent I would highly recommend.

Hi StephanieCB,

Thank you for your question. It's great to see the feedback from our members and I hope this will help you make a decision. Visiting is always a good idea, and you might be interested in our directory of Headway approved care providers if you are interested in alternatives: headway.org.uk/approved-car...

We do publish a booklet titled 'Rehabilitation after brain injury', and I would be happy to send you a copy if you send us a private message with your full name and address (click our username then the 'Send a message' button on the right).

Best wishes,

Headway.
