Hi Jigsaw. I took amitriptyline for over 20 years with no serious side effects, and certainly no weight gain until, that is, the dosage was increased. The results of that increase are still clearly memorable ! I've always had a good (large) appetite but almost overnight I developed an insatiable one and, for the first time in my life (apart from pregnancy), I put on weight, two stone of weight !

I didn't immediately connect this with the amitriptyline but, when I saw my GP he burst out laughing and said "Ah, of course, we upped the dose didn't we". So I gradually lowered the dosage and reverted to my former slimness......phew.

But it all depends on the amount you're taking. And if it's a temporary treatment, things will go back to normal when it's done. What dose are you having presently ? x

Thank you Cat, interesting what you said! I'm only on a low dose but I'm constantly munching!

Oh well, winter will soon be here and I can disguise my lumps & bumps under big jumpers! :-)

Take care, Linda x

Hi,

I had an SAH caused by a ruptured aneurysm 6 months ago. I was prescribed amitriptyline 10 mg back then and have been taking it since. I have a constant buzzing in my right ear so maybe this is why I was prescribed it. In the last 6 months I have put on 1 stone in weight. I was a big eater before though but because I worked in a very physical job my weight stayed at only 10 stone. Since my SAH I have not been able to keep fit to the same level and I think it is that has caused the weight gain not the amitriptyline. Although I used to eat healthy I do find that I am much more attracted to high fat foods since my SAH and amitriptyline.

Hi Mick

Thanks for replying. I had my sah two years ago, have only been prescribed Amitriptyline a month ago, although the buzzing iny ear started 18 months ago and 2 weeks after starting Amitriptyline I got the munchies! Can I ask has it help the ear buzzing? I think with me if hasn't really it just that I don't get quite so angry with it :-)

Hope things are going well with you, I remember how hard the early days were trying to come to terms with everything

Take care, Linda x

Hi Linda,

I think you maybe right about it not working but reducing the anger lol. I have now started to get the horrible 'whooshing' noises again but these sound like they are in the middle of my head. Yes it is a very horrible thing to go through in that I have found that I having a very different personality is difficult to deal with not to mention all the other issues eg tiredness, pain, memory problems just to name a few.

I am seeing my GP tomorrow to see if it maybe worthwhile upping the dose a bit as 10mg just isn't really doing the job!

Let's hope we can sort our ear probs out.

Take care

Mick x
