Hi, was in coma for nearly 8 weeks - but in various hospitals for about six years. Wasn't even offered neural physiotherapy but now getting neuro-psychiatric treatment (20 years on!) Had no balance probs, although not able to walk for 1st year (open, shattered femur & neuro damage), you weren't in hospital for long! Would imagine its left an indelible dent in your life though, hope you recover completely......

Hello

I have found it extremely distressing in all kinds of ways - these 2.5 years completely unnatural of course. I am working my best to get 'back on my feet' - difficult but daily worth the 'easy' work of it. 'No pain, no gain', etc. Neuro-physiotherapy - for vestibular impairment - very interesting and worthwhile. Contact me if interested in that progress, in Cape Town, South Africa.

HI THERE.I WAS IN COMA 4 ,5 AND 1/2 WEEKS BACK 20+ YEARS.NOT EXPECTED TO LIVE GIVEN THAT I HAD PICKED UP TOXOPLASMOSIS.FOLLOWING PERITINITIS.IT KILLED MY UNBORN BABY,GAVE ME 2 STROKES ON MY LEFT HAND SIDE.I AM STILL HERE AND STILL WORKING FOR MY OWN CHARITABLE TRUST- THE SASSY TRUST.THRU THE 20 ODD YEARS I HAVE BEEN IN AND OUT OF CAREERS BUT IT IS ONLY RECENTLY THRU DISCUSSION WITH MY POOR FAMILY,THAT I HAVE A FINAL DIAGNOSIS - JACKSONIAN EPILEPSY.I TOO HAVE EXTREMELY POOR BALANCE BUT THRU NEURO PHYSIO HAVE SOMEHOW TAUGHT MY BODY COPING MECHANISMS.I ADORE AGATHA CHRISTIES' POIROT.AND HEE HEE ONE OF MY QUACKS COMMENTED THAT I WALKED LIKE HIM.FAIR ENOUGH HE'S RIGHT AND I TOOK IT AS A COMPLIMENT.I HAVE BOTH A LEFT AND A RIGHT SIDE LEAN ( DEPENDING ON THE WEATHER-HAA HAA) BUT MOST PEOPLE CLAIM IT IS NEGLIGABLE.I JUST ADJUST MY POSTURE SO I CAN LEAN ON STABLE SUPPORTS.OH AND I HAVE ZILLIONS OF MULTI COLOURED WALKING STICKS.THEY ARE MY LIFE LINE/SUPPORT.I USE THEM DEAD CENTRE OF MY BODY IF I AM GETTING TIRED.AND MY GORGEOUS HUBBY ACCOMPANIES ME TO BE MY SUPPORT ON THE LEFT SIDE.I ALSO HAVE TRAINED MY OWN MINATURE LABRADOODLE TO BE MY PET ASSISTANT.HE IS ONE IN A MILLION AND ACCOMPANIES ME ON SHORT WALKS.HE TELLS ME WHEN TRAFFIC IS COMING AND SITS AND WAITS.ONCE WHEN I COLLAPSED WITH AN ASTHMA ATTACK HE EVEN RAN TO A NEIGHBOURS HOUSE WHO KINDLY CAME AND PICKED ME UP.NEEDLESS TO SAY I CANT DO THIS ON A REGULAR BASIS.MY TAKE ON LIFE IS - WHAT DOES NOT KILL YOU MAKES YOU STRONGER.BUT THEN I HAVE HAD TO DEVELOP A SKIN LIKE A RHINO DUE TO LOTS OF NASTY DISABLIST COMMENTS.NOTHING HURTS ME.I HOPE YOU WILL BE AS LUCKY AS I HAVE BEEN.AND THIS MOTTO - SOME DAYS I CAN,SOME I CANT HEY HO AND CARRY ON! BEST OF LUCK AND TAKE CARE.XX

I was in a coma after getting susspected encephalitis lethargica. The doctors thought I was going to die but here I am, typing away. I had to re-learn everything and my memory is still not as good as it was and my balance sometimes worrys me - BUT I am just about to graduate from Uni so things do get better :) But I don't think I will be exactly the same as before xx
