Hello

I’m very concerned that after my period m still experiencing brown watery discharge, it’s been a week now, I’m 48 and definitely not pregnant. I’m booked in for my routine smear tomorrow but deeply worried now. I did have the smallest spotting last cycle but it won’t end this cycle. Anyone else?

Thanks

Hi

It's good you're getting your smear done.

There could be a number of reasons for your discharge and you should book an appointment with your GP so you get properly assessed.

Hi there,

Thank you for your message.

There are different reasons unrelated to cancer why we might get some brown discharge after a period - it's often a sign of old blood (hence the brown colour) taking it's time to come out, and isn't uncommon in people who are perimenopausal as hormone levels are changing.

Please do check in with your doctor, as we do encourage anyone who notices any unusual bleeding/discharge to have this investigated.

Feel free to email our information service nurse@eveappeal.org.uk if you have any other questions.

Best Wishes,

The Ask Eve Team
