Cervical screening

Hi The results of my last smear test in April 2015 showed low grade dyskaryosis with no evidence of HPV infection as I am 54 my next screening is not due until 2020. My sister was diagnosed with advanced cervical cancer after waiting a year for a repeat test so I am understandably worried to have to wait 5 years for another screening. My GP said he is unable to request an earlier test but if I am worried he can send me for an invasive test! I am reluctant to take this path as I feel I just need another smear to check if there are any further changes. Is he right?

Hi Karenall,

Thank you for getting in touch with us. We are sorry to hear about your sister's experience with cervical cancer, and completely understand that it probably isn't reassuring to hear that cervical cancer is not a hereditary disease.

Your GP is following National Guidelines which tell him that your negative HPV status and the cell changes on your cervix do not need further investigation until your next scheduled smear test in 2020.

If you would like to talk to us about this in more detail, please give Ask Eve a call on 0808 802 0019.

Wishing you well,

The Ask Eve Team
