Don't know about the insurance side of things, but I tried to travel by plane (and car) about nine months after E. Absolute hell. Complete misery. 0/10 would recommend.

But that's because I have lots of overstimulation, dysregulation, and movement problems that others with history of E do NOT have. I don't know how you are in crowds or around loud noises (revving engines) and such, but I can't stand any of it. My brain and body freak out: primal fear, pain, involuntary movements...

If you don't have severe problems like that, maybe a holiday would do you a lot of good, especially with your fam. For me, leaving the house almost always causes more harm than good. I hope that's not the case for you.

Take care,

Kit

So sorry Kitnkaboodle, you really are brave managing as you do. However, I haven’t travelled by plane since Covid. But I did fly twice before that. First a little 30 min trip to Ireland. That was after only 10 months. Tiring but only my husband and I went and he did all the work. I just sat there! Second time I went to see my son and family in Perth, Australia!!!! That was 18 months after E. Just before Covid. We had a proper stop over, again husband helped all the way but I managed and it was so so worth it. I’m usually very aware of pressure but I wore the headphones a lot on the long flight and that really helped. Obviously plan for at leat one fatigue day. But it’ll be somewhere different and crashing can be part of the holiday. I did declare E to the insurance company and they didn’t seem to have any problems either time. I can’t do heat very well now (I’ll be hibernating next few days!) but I think try a shortish trip somewhere you want to be. It’s something to look forward to. You will be nervous and apprehensive but feel proud when you’ve done it!

I have never been abroad because my Mum (who is no longer with us) had a fear of heights and flying so I can't answer your questions.

I have just got back from Canada flying and declared encephalitis to the travel insurance with no issues. The flight out was absolutely fine, but the flight back, I had a total meltdown because I wasn’t sat with my husband and then they moved him and I couldn’t see him. I normally love flying and was quite disturbed to react like that- turned out I was ill and my brain couldn’t cope with the thought of 9 hours ‚by myself‘ feeling like hell. However the air stewards were great and got my husband to come over to me. The lady next to him in his extra leg room seat even offered to pay for an upgrade so that I could move seats- people are so kind! And the guys I did sit next to were great- one had a Daschund walking business with his wife so I saw some cute puppy pics!
