Advice Please: Can i get an Dyslexia... - The Dyslexia Comm...
Advice Please
Yes you can, if you are over 18 you will need to pay anyway, I think the fee is about £300 for an adult, not sure if it varies for children. You can also get basic assessments on-line for about £30.
If you are taking any kind of further education then, certainly in Scotland, the college/university will arrange for an assessment for free.
I got an assessment following my son's diagnosis and I had to pay. I got some contact details of assessors via dyslexia associations. I didn't go through my GP and I don't think that he knows even now, fourteen years later.
Hi, I know how frustrating it is to suspect you are dyslexic and not find a way of knowing for sure. I had probs all through school and beyond, but no one noticed. I didnt get tested till I was 50 (54 now). I got tested at adult learning centre - "Link into learning". I think Im dyspraxic too, but dont know how to get tested for that now!! Hope you can get some help somewhere.
hi. you wont get any joy from the Drs because dyslexia is not classed as a medical condition but is classed as an educational condition, IE a learning disability and differs from person to person that's what makes it such a complex condition to recognize i say recognize because only a Dr can diagnose and since a Dr cant give a diagnosis "not a medical condition" so only a educational professional will be able to help .but nothing really out there if you are an adult ,unless you pay through the nose .. i know because i am a severe dyslexic i have hid it for all my adult years and only since going for a job interview i failed at the first hurdle basic numeracy and basic literacy the same job i have held for 21 years previous.i did an online test well i did 2 just to make sure i was not thick in the head .The questions were that only a dyslexic could tick right or is that tick wrong.so i have enrolled at my local learn direct centre
last week and trying to brush up with everything from IT to numeracy and literacy at my own pace the staff are very helpful and am beginning to get some confidence .So my advise is to check out your nearest learn direct centre ..
Hi Patwalls, you were so right. The GP's I asked for help with my dyslexia more or less said that without test nothing was definite, only suspected and there was nothing they could do as it was an educational item. Feel so angry, deserted isolated. So just have to cope with it. Thank you all for your help and guidance. Please take care. weemikec
