Gotthecall,

I’m at about 15% function right now. I’m still having no real trouble with fluid retention so no fluid restrictions. But it’s my understanding that that is very individual. So your friend may need fluid restrictions with more renal function than I’ve got, etc. (I’m somewhat surprised I’ve still got no fluid restrictions. Occasionally I’ll have a day or two with some fluid retention. But that’s only about every 4 weeks or so and usually means I’ve ingested more sodium than usual ... I do adhere to a very low sodium diet though.)

I eliminate fluid throughout the day, usually about 1 hour after I drink it. They haven’t asked me to track my fluid output but I do track my weight daily. I generally have stable weight. Occasionally I’ll have a half pound increase in weight from one day to the next. But this is rare. My nephrologist’s specific directions are to drink water when I’m thirsty and to be sure I’m drinking at least 64 fluid oz a day. I only drink water; no other beverages.

I am at 10% and have no fluid restrictions. I tend to drink small amounts several times a day otherwise I do find if I drank a lot in one go this makes me breathless.

I have been quite lucky in that I have had over four years being below 18% since being diagnosed and I have quite a decent quality of life even now at 10%. I was working full time until I hit 12% and then I was too tired to carry on so gave up about a year ago. Well best of luck to you and your friend.
