For my Type1 I take (the right amount) insulin. For my type2 (insulin resistance) I lose weight by eating high protein and low carb, low fat and very low sugar. I walk as much as my bad back and gait allows. Swim as best I can and do stretches all day. Making my underactive thyroid function as best it can and steppy stone around my other health problems. Giving weight loss a priority with good blood glucose levels otherwise I don't lose the enormous weight GAINED in my 42yrs of undiagnosed diabetes.

Ps. I hv never smoked and stopped alcohol totally. I've followed Dr's advice even in times of needing IVF.

With limited food & regular exercises if we maintain, don't bother about diabetic.

Hi Jerry

Two things - well three 😁

First - nice survey 👍

Second and this is me being a PITA!

- There are 8 bars but only six y-axis titles - and I can’t remember the 8 questions!

- How about stop alcohol completely, as a vote?

Miles - told you I was being a PITA

8 bars on my chart Sandy. Wonder if it depends on the device you’re on?

in reply to ThreeSmiles

Thanks Miles, the problem is the text of Avoid excess alcohol is too long so there isn't room for Avoid processed food. To see what each bar of the graph represents all you have to do is hover your cursor over it.

Here's all 7 choices plus other:

Avoid excess alcohol

Avoid processed food

Eat healthily

Exercise regularly

Limit caffeine

Reduced weight

Stopped smoking

Other

I hope this helps,

Jerry 😊

Thanks Jerry. The list is helpful 👍. The hovering or even touching the bars when using an iPad doesn’t work unfortunately 😑....

in reply to ThreeSmiles

Hi Miles sometimes there's a bar graph with a poll and others a pie chart and the text fits in the pie chart but overlaps on a bar graph. It is what it is and polls are fun so thanks for participating.

In answer to your first question I thought reduce alcohol might be more applicable than teetotal. So it's a very valid question. 👍

That sounds an interesting graph 😁. Sorry - just my poor SOH!

Yes I agree re alcohol, just that, being like I am, I love to tick the box - no alcohol 😁.

The other issue with the polls are: there’s only 8 slots and if you want to do a poll, you have to turn the phone sideways for the entire choice sometimes. Otherwise, you can’t revote since HU didn’t set up the poll area for voting more than one time, unfortunately.😫

Hi Leah

I have concluded with Jerry that it is the fact that I view the results graph on an iPad which is cramping the text on the Y-axis more so than if I viewed the results graph on say on a PC. I must try that sometime 😁.

My point about the vote for no alcohol was me having a little fun because I love being able to tick a box that says “Do you drink Alcohol?” and I can say “No”. It really doesn’t matter a jot for the purpose of this Vote 😁. As I say it’s just a very personal thing 😁👍.

A healthy diet is most important for a diabetic patient. Normally, it comprises of low carbohydrate, low calorie and high fibres. Side by side, regular exercise and proper medication (as the case may be) are also essential to control diabetic up to desired extent. I have been suffering from T2 diabetes for nearly long 35 years and my present age is 72 - years. Apart from taking healthy diet and regular exercise with required medication, I have been taking a glass of raw vegetable juice mixed with water having combination of one small carrot, one small tomato, a small piece of turmeric root and a small bitter gourd, every day in the morning for last 30 - years. My present BMI is 27 and HbA1C varies from 6.5 to 7.5. I am a non-smoker and normally do not take alcohol. So, it appears to me that adaptability of appropriate lifestyle is one of the most important factors to a person suffering from diabetes.

Hi kishore You seem to have a great approach and I think that you are very wise and agree that everyone should adapt and appropriate lifestyle. 😊

i am 68,having a t2 diabetes from past 30+years, controlled with medicines(including insulin) with limited food and used to eat fruits and continuously drank alcohol without control from past 50 years or so, but maintained my hba1c level, between 6 and 7.2.when i stopped alcohol few months, due retina detachment surgery,(now 5th surgery is due for the same right eye) my hba1c level goes up from 6.2 to 7.2.

so far so good, nothing to worry.

I am not a diabetic and did not want to become one. So, I followed all the above and also stopped cereals and started eating only twice a day.

Have you had any blood test?

Which cereal did you eat for breakfast?

You had two meals a day between what times?

Do you go for exercise?

Answers may help others.

Thanks.

Hi yenyen

Just for interest - I only have two meals a day too - I am a T2 diabetic - 30 plus years mostly on Metformin. But in May I went on an NHS XPert diabetes course on which we were told you don’t HAVE to have breakfast if you’re not hungry. But if you do it’s OK to have the low carb elements of a full English - which mostly all are anyway!

I did however stop drinking alcohol 5 years ago.

About a month ago my HbA1c value came down to the lowest level anyone at my doctor’s surgery had ever had and I was allowed to stop the Metformin 👍.

This advice re eating is, of course, contrary to nearly everything we have previously been told for at least the last 20 years!

Oh yes, this was part of a LCHF diet.

I sometimes don’t hardly have any lunch either...this of course wasn’t advised 😁 - but if I’m not hungry.......

But I always have a good (hot) evening meal 👍.

NHS expert course and book.

I asked my GP practice for a book, the answer was I have to buy one!. My blood glucose test was high in 2011 and I am in the GP diabetic register, I get a letter once a year for eye check, foot check and blood check. In 2001 my GP surgery did not have any diet control programme!!. GP practice nurse mentioned she received a copy of the latest version, the old version book was not offered to me.

Now I am going on a course to get a free book!!, one of my question will be who set the individual HbA1c target, I have been reading the individual target a lot lately.

The WHO number is 48 mmol/ml

ThreeSmiles profile image
ThreeSmiles in reply to sandybrown

Yes I went on the course and I was given the excellent free book 👍. Some would argue, including me, there’s a bit too much on the biology/chemistry (?) of Diabetes but hey ho it’s excellent nevertheless 😁👍.

No - I was never offered the book either. The book and course seem to go hand in hand.

I don’t know what I achieved but I was told it was good.

On my records it says as a general comment that:-

“Targets should be individualised according to risk of complications vs risk of hypoglycaemia.

Aim for 48 mmol/mol in most groups with diabetes”.

So same target value as you quoted.

I eat a regular south Indian vegetarian diet and my exercise is walking 8000 steps a day. I am able to maintain HbA1C around 6.0 during the last one and half years. I take minimal dosage of tablets.

sandybrown in reply to Srk1942

What medication do you take to maintain at 6.0?

I live in India. So, I do not know whether you are familiar with our drugs.

I take Reclide XR-60 and Tenebite-20 along with breakfast, 1/2 tablet of Reclimet at lunch and 1 tablet of Tenebite-20 at dinner.

Comig in late, excellent topic! follow 5 colesly. When it comes to diet t s high end carb. Keto-75-80 grams a day. Athough now expertiment with Strach restistant effects of chilling carb's I've increased my carb level and increased my weight. I've gained 4lbs in 2 weeks. Very amazing! I've battled to gain weigght even when not on a Keto diet. My neuro. put me on for seizures and endo. for blood glucose control was a hand mutual choice. I've balance out my A1C to 5.4 and my seizures have reduced. We'll know more in time have a new puppy in training he is a dream, reacted to my needs for an insulin emergency(low). I wear a DEXCOM for that issue- I need a seizure dog. Time will tell he is only 6 monts and 70lbs. The Keto diet is excellet no breads, pasta, rice, their are certain products and if the carb range fits you can consume. My husband will not touch unless it's a special event. Lot's of fats, butter, ghee, cetain vegtables like cauliflower, broccolli. take care with tomato's. There are ton's of baking recipes with Almond flour, it's a wide world in Keto!

Thanks Jerry I hope this next day finds you well!
