Inflamed sore and red gums

Hi guys , I noticed a few days back my gums were feeling a little sore and in the last two days they have become very painful, inflamed, bleeding and feel as if my gums are pulsating??? I don't clean my teeth as good as I should and I smoke! What is a deep clean and will my teeth look and be worse after one?. I know that sounds ridiculous but I'm worried about. Deep clean

Many thanks x

Hi a deep clean will remove the deposits under the gumline usually with an ultrasonic scaler. You can have local anaesthetic if you find it uncomfortable but most people can cope. If you get a mouthwash called Peroxyl from the chemist it might help to settle your gum a bit. Do not use Corsodyl and never rely on a mouthwash to clean your teeth. Good effective oral hygiene and stopping/cutting down on cigs would be the best thing for yourgums and teeth.

I have just read your reply to someone ask about a deep dental clean, And you replied never use corsodyl, why is that,I thought is was to treat bleeding gums and irritated gums?, I’ve been referred to guys hospital in London by my dentist for treatment, but the can’t treat me until I have sorted my gum disease out, And have told me to brush twice a day for at least 6-10 minuets and to have a deep clean an my dentist

Hi I actually said DON'T use Corsodyl and never rely on mouthwashes. Corsodyl will probably stop the bleeding but won't treat deep rooted periodontal problems. So people will think cos bleeding has stopped everything is ok but it's more a case of it masking the deeper gum disease. It can also cause heavy staining and affect taste. It's better to have deep cleaning done and carry out an effective oral hygiene regime.

Thanks for your reply, so wot is the best and quickest way to treat gum disease as I have another appointment on November 10th to assess my gums before treatment, and if there no better they won’t treat me.??

Hi I've just noticed on your 1st post you were told to brush for 6-10 minutes. This is ridiculous advice! It is over brushing! 2 minutes twice a day is adequate Maybe watch a tutorial on YouTube on the Bass technique for toothbrushing. Also either floss or use interdental brushes 1xday. If floss you need to take it under the gum surface and for interdental brushes use the biggest size you can put inbetween the teeth comfortably. No need to use toothpaste on them. There are probably YouTube tutorials on floss/interdental brushes too.

Is your dentist not offering treatment with the hygienist? They would be able to show you a good oral hygiene routine tailored to you and also clean your teeth.

Hi, I have gum disease and have very good oral hygiene so I was quite shocked to be told this, my dentist advised my to use tepe brushes there like little bristles on a wire and use these inbetween your teeth after washing teeth, also when you have brushed your teeth not to rinse out the remaining toothpaste as this looks after your teeth, also rinse with mouth wash mid morning and after t not after brushing your teeth as your swilling away the toothpaste, so I get up wash my teeth about 12 I rinse with mouthwash then t time rinse with mouthwash then bedtime wash teeth use the tepe brush, I have had the deep clean also and it's basically like having a polish mine did hurt a bit as my teeth are very sensitive but otherwise was bearable, I hope all works well for you and you get it sorted.

Hello missme31

You mentioned that you have gum disease . do you have periodontitis gum disease ?

Hope you don't mind me asking ,I have this , diagnosed by good dentist 14 years ago but think I've had it many years prior to this !

Combination of genetic / bad dentist when young / not thorough enough cleaning in younger years / bad advise from dentist when young ...

My dentist keeps it controlled and I now clean the best I can twice a day at least ..

It would be nice to correspond with others dealing with it .

For some reason I have suddenly become frightened and concerned about future with this disease , due to recent anxiety mostly bright on by strange teeth sensations which my dentist can't find any reason for it !!!

How long have you been diagnosed ?
