When you say suffered - have you been diagnosed?
Gum disease is treated as follows:
1.) Your dentist will teach you how to clean your teeth well (2xday, correct technique, flossing, interdental bruses)
2.) Your dentist/hygienist may scale your teeth (if severe disease - scaling is done after gums are numbed)
3.) Then will call you back after a while to check if the cleaning has worked
NB! your dentist can clean your teeth, but that's only a small fraction of the treatment - the rest is up to you with upholding a good daily cleaning regime being the most important factor
