Idiopathic Parkinson',s is the technical name for atypical PD. However as no 2 people present to their Doctor exactly the same it is fare to say there is noa typical PD but only a commonality of symptoms.

One of the MDS Doctors in my hearing said the only guaranteed common symptom is Constipation.

Not even that is either as my hubby has been dx nearly four years now and is the opposite and is loose all the time so needs to take meds to bind him up.

Did this doctor tell you why he thinks Constipation is the only symptom guaranteed for PD.? My boyfriend has problems with that and he has IBS. I would still be there asking questions.. I hope you got your disability .

wikipedia has a long list of causes. One Dutch site says the difference between 'typical' and 'atypical' is that atypical patients says they cannot ride a bicycle!

I think it basically means that they do not know! The observation about bicycles is fairly recent, and has not yet been put to the test with a large sample of people. And it doesn't take into account those who never learned to ride one in the first place.

Idiopathic Parkinson disease (IPD) is not the same as Atypical parkinsonism, or even atypical PD. Idiopathic means 'of unknown origin', and in reference to Parkinson disease is the common or garden variety of PD which neuros know and can describe.

A fair way to view the label of atypical PD is that the neuro/doctor is not seeing what they understand to fit into the classic view of PD.

As this is in any case a hard condition to diagnose, they are keeping open the possibility of treating you and trying to find out what exactly is happening, so it is not all negative.

You understand it the way I do. Sure wish they knew for sure as the meds don't seem to help. I just bought a U step walker with the laser light & it seems to help with the freezing up. The bike also helps some. I'm blessed that I do have a very good movement disorder doctor.

Parkinsonism is not PD. It has some of the typical symptoms but it does not respond to sinemet or other PD drugs.

lindylanka had it right, idiopathic means of unknown origin, anything with A- in front of it means not or without. eg atypical, asymetrical, apnea. PD is not parkinsonism but they are related and share common s/s. Constipation really? Thats the only thing i dont have

t seems that I caused a minor storm. Didn't mean to!

Firstly Constipation is the one symptom that most PD sufferers get . I am sure that there are exceptions to this and I wish them all good luck and wish I was in your numbers

Secondly," Mia Culpa" I didn't see the spelling of Parkinsonism. Iam getting Cataracts removed in April and this proves the need..My response was wrong.Others have answered correctly

I have idiopathic parkinsnism and was told it was because they did not know the cause of it.

I think Im as consgtipated as before or not depending on what I eat. If you avoid wheat and eat fibrous foods then you are ok.

Not forgetting WATER the most important thing to drink for our brain and second brain in the stomach. As we get older we dont always get so thirsty but its very important to drink 8 glasses a day if you can.
