Problems with milk

Has anyone any idea why milk, including soya, oat, almond, rice, has a disastrous effect on my husbands PD? It can turn him 'off' immediately.

It could be the protein content and when he takes his meds. If he is drinking a protein with his meds he is not getting full absorption in the gut.

Thank you all for your replies. We are aware of the problems with cows milk but don't understand why the same problems arise with soya, almond and oat milk.

The recommendations for medication and protein is no protein foods an hour before levadopa and 30 mins after, although my husband took Stelevo for quite a few years before we noticed protein affected them . He’s been diagnosed for nearly 12 years and protein really affects his medication now , especially milk protein, he really loves cheese but cannot eat it now only in very small amounts ☹️

Also it has a lot of sugar which isn’t good.

Two months back I learned cow's milk has begun cause me problems but not almond.

I am 74 years of age and been a PD sufferer for the past 4 years. I take only Madorpa 250mg daily. If any food item disagrees with me I simply abstain from consumption.

Milk and ice cream bother me a lot, if I have too much in quantity. I love ice cream, but can only have small amounts at a time. (Small shakes etc.) I've learned to adapt, and roll with the flow, because if I didn't have a medicine that helped with my PD symptoms, I'd be a mess all the time. Over the years, I've learned to take the bad with the good.

The level of protein in almond milk is a mere 1gram per serving. I don’t understand how absorption of levodopa could be affected by such a small amount of protein.

Maybe he should try that again. I would have thought oat milk was the same too. Thank you

I have also found that certain antibiotics prevent the absorption of levodopa, too. I have learned for my husband to avoid ciprofloxacin for example.

The milk alternatives usually have lots of additives to make them taste acceptable. I recently gave up milk altogether and now use natural yoghurt (no added sugar) and stewed fruit (ditto) on my muesli. That works for me and for others. For some reason yoghurt is not so competitive on LD take up as milk. Better for the gut too!

Thank you Kevin. We have tried it before in the past. Will try it again.

good luck! I hated giving up milk but it made enough of a difference to me to carry on and noticeably better gut all round ... See if you can find a good live yoghurt he likes. I have less bloating (that was not a good look!). I was afraid of losing weight but that has not happened with all the yoghurt!

That's Kevin. My husband has always loved milk but he has arrived at the same conclusion as you have too.
