Sorry gang. You've probably done this yourself: quickly read a post, internalised it and reflected for a few days then wanted to find it again so you could make a contribution, only to find that you couldn't locate it? Some 'newbie' posted about a week ago and declared (as far as I can remember) that he'd (think it was a he!) that he'd just been dxed and was a vegan for as long as he can remember. Blimey! Certainly puts the cat amongst the pigeon for the belief that an anti-inflammatory diet is the way to go. I mean a vegan diet is quite hard-core on veggies and goes beyond vegetarianism right? This disconcerted me and made me question whether I can be bothered with dietary reform and initiatives. Whilst of course vegans can experience stress (which I think is big factor in the cause of PD and every chronic disease), is there some truth to the old adage 'if you're gonna get it, you're gonna get it'?

I guess it depends where you fall on the PD causes.
If it's the whole ferroxidase function (iron/copper balance) then veganism can set you out of whack because it doesn't have a lot of retinol or bound copper.
If it's inflammation, then it depends how much you rely on vegetables and how much is 'bad' vegan food, ie pesticides, hydrolyzed soya, rancid vegetable oils. And bread I would imagine is a biggie for vegans, I'm currently reading Wheat Belly and got my poor dad off it for a week's trial.
If it's genetic, then what genes are you expressing and what is tuning them up or down, largely food and the environment.
i'm guessing that, because pd has been treated, for centuries with mucana pruriens, and contains compounds that correct sever glands +, that this illness is precipitated by malabsorption or malnutrition.... leaky gut, i guess the latter would make it, an infection. i'm going on mp, hell with levocarb.
Vegans can eat unhealthy diets full of grains and sugar.
I didn’t know that. I thought that vegetarians allowed that stuff but vegans didn’t ?
From what I've been reading - many if not most vegans are b12 deficient. Vegetarians are at risk too but not as much since they usually eat dairy and fish. B12 deficiency can cause a host of neurological symptoms and might be hard to diagnose (serum b12 levels may not reflect tissue/organs levels) so if I would be a vegan then the best b12 deficiency preventative course would be b12 injections.
Yes. I believe liver is the best source of B12.
Just saw a terrifying documentary on diet that has scared me off sugar again. Rats fed a high sugar diet for 4 weeks showed a marked decline in memory. When they back to a normal diet the female rats recovered 100% but the male rats never fully recovered!
Another fascinating (if not relevant!) fact was that only 10% of obese people that lose weight are able to keep it off, and by 2025 80% of Australians will be obese.
So I am back to trying to eat less than 30g sugar a day, and keeping up the veggies, but not being too obsessive. When I was being super strict I didn't really notice any difference!!
Hi Astra!
