It seems instinctive to tell people to take deep breaths in an emergency when we notice they are shallow breathing. I suspect that ongoing stress leads to chronic shallow breathing. I have been known for my periodic deep sighs ever since childhood and have recently been measured at as high a rate as 28 breaths minute compared with the normal max.of about 20. Having recently installed freeware which forces you to relax every so often and I shall use the minibreaks to deepen my breathing.

I like this article. I do think deep belly breathing is good and helpful.
