PD and coconut oil

Hi, all.

I signed up on behalf of my dad. He is 84 years old, a former fighter pilot but now a shadow of his former self due to parkinsons disease. While trawling the net on health benefits of Coconut oil, particularly its effects on PD, I came across this site, read the comments and was instantly hooked. So here I am, trying to help my dad regain some of his lost glory, shine, whatever....at-least if he can drop that mask and walk without falling over, I'd be getting a little bit of my old dad back.

Here's wishing us luck......!

Coconut oil: 6 tbsps per day (or more; adjust to your experience) Recommended: 2 tbsps at each meal and 2 before bed.

Heat 1/3 coffee cup of coconut milk, the variety that contains 6g of sugar, place two tbsp. of coconut oil and after it melts in a moment, you have a tasty drink not unlike hot cocoa. For that matter, I sometimes add a chunk of unsweetened cocoa for flavor.

Gel caps?

1000mg gel caps are not near enough to the dose necessary.

1000mg = 1 gram / 1 Tablespoon = 14.25g

“Therapeutic levels of MCTs have been studied at 20 grams per day. According to Dr. Newport's calculations, just over two tablespoons of coconut oil (about 35 ml or seven level teaspoons) would supply you with the equivalent of 20 grams of MCT, which is indicated as either a preventative measure against degenerative neurological diseases, or as a treatment for an already established case.”

I always appreciate such helpful information and I am most sincere about that BUT to take CO in such quantities continuouslyld be very expensive. Can you recommend a brand of CO that would fit the bill as I have big shipping costs  as well living in Ukraine. I pref er the taste of Philippines CO.

Many thanks

I have written quite a bit on CO and it continues to benefit me and many others. There are also many who fail to benefit. You can find a lot of discussion in many posts, e.g.

healthunlocked.com/parkinso...

There is evidence that statin drugs reduce the benefit of CO

There is much to learn. Please keep in touch.

Thank you fwes, royprop. I'm raring to get dad started on CO. Will report results as soon as I get any. and yes, will reduce his statin medication.

I'm planning the introduction as follows :

day 1: 1 TBSP (table spoon) with BBF

day 2: as above plus 1 TBSP with lunch

day 3: as above plus 1 TBSP with dinner

day 4: 2 TBSP at BBF, 1 at lunch 1 at dinner

day 5: 2 TBSP at BBF, 2 at lunch, 1 at dinner

day 6 onwards: 2:2:2 at BBF:lunch:dinner respectively

Any comments on the above plan? Should I go slower?

Another thing: Where i live, its very hot, so the CO is always liquid. 1 tablespoon of liquid is much less than 1 tablespoon of solid. So should I put it in the fridge to get table spoons of solid CO?

I take it many ways: blended into a hot drink is rather painless, melted over hot food, etc. but if necessary, out of a spoon is possible and not so appetizing.

Other than the attack, you might enjoy

Your dosing plan is sound, but could be too hasty. If loose stools develop, back off  a bit. That is the major complaint that I am aware of.

Also, at 120 calories/tbsp, weight gain is a possible issue. Watch the benefits vs. dose. Don't increase his dose beyond 4T/day unless you see a benefit (some would say 2T).

Right then. I'll go slower. Will stay with 1 table spoon each with BBF, lunch and dinner in the first week and increase from 2nd week onward if there aren't other issues. Many thanks for all your suggestions.

I tried that for three months while in Florida for the Winter.  For me, it didn't seem to make much of a difference.  Hopefully, your Dad will have a very positive experience and regain some of that spark and flair you remember. Blessings....

Hi - maybe tell us a bit more about your Dad's situation - is he on any prescribed medication? What other things have you considered besides C/O oil? This is a great site - there's a lot of experience from people living with PD and what can help, both in terms of prescribed drugs and other remedies. I've found Mucuna Puriens, in the form of Zandopa, really effective. Different people seem to respond to different things. I use C/O too.

Hi Sue, would you mind if I picked your brain a little about Zandopa.

I've been using Macuna Dopa from Biovea but decided to buy Zandopa to try.

Can you tell me how much you take and if you dissolve the powder in fruit juice/water or what.

Thank you. I'd be grateful for any advice.

A more general point on coconut oil. Has anyone tried it in golden milk. You make it from tumeric and a pinch of black pepper and CO to taste. There are numerous recipes on the net. It is a delicious drink altho it doesn't sound very promising.

Love to all.

Thank you Jash, Stevie.

He is on SYNDOPA 125 mg 3 times a day and AMANTIDINE 100 mg once a day.

Besides the above, he has a ton of medicines for his heart condition and Prostate problems.

Hi. I take 2-3 heaped teaspoons of Zandopa in half a tumbler of water twice a day.  It tastes disgusting whether you use fruit juice or water! I've taken Zandopa for around 18 months. I think it allowed me to stay off medication for more than a year and now that I do take medication (4mg requip) it allows me to stay on a lower dose.

I think you have to experiment - start with a small amount and work your way up until you find tbd right dose. It makes me a little nauseous for about 20 minutes half an hour after taking it.  I get it on eBay from a company called hotdealsbazzar

Look up my post.  We have some zandopa left over unopened from when we had to switch to sine met and will be glad to give it away for postage.  In the US re postage to make it worthwhile.

Thank you but I'm in the UK. Also I don't know whether it is going to work for me. There may be someone else who would make better use of it.

Best wishes.

Syndopa induces more rigidity , slowness and more side effects. Please slowly replace. Syndopa by Kappi kachhu or zandopa, both are Indian Mucana, it should be taken with half fresh lime juice in empty stomach for quick action. One will experience totally free from PD symptoms within 30 - 45 mins, after that one can take food. ON time lasts from 2.5 to 3 hrs, start with 1 TBS and increase slowly 1. 25 - 1.5 TBS max per dosage x 3 times daily. He can also have water melon fruit or juice, this protects neurons. Also give him riped bananas, which gives natural dopamine. Give him Ashwagandharista 1 TBS or 1x250mg Ashwagandha tab after food. Where are you based ?? In India, so that I can suggest you, Ayurvaidic treatment center, where, he can be treated

God bless you and your family

Regards

My husband has parkinson's and we are taking Mucuna Pruriens Extract 1000mg 5X200 Caps L-Dopa Velvet Bean. He takes 1-2 daily. What is the best way to take these, and are we taking correct amount?

Any help would be wonderful! He is on Azilect, which is an MAO inhibitor, so he takes the MP 12 hours apart from his Azilect. This is the only medication he is on right now.
