My mom has Parkinson and I think some of her problems are from being Gluten Intolerate. What are your thoughts?

Maybe, what problems are you thinking of?

Parkinsons isn't just a movement disorder it affects us in many ways.

This article describes it well.

With Gluten you have alot of the same symptoms of Parkinson. Dr. David Perlmutter also believes that it is related to Parkinson. She gets bladder infections a lot, moods, loneliness, memory loss, depression, mood swings, the stomach issues, etc. The Parkinson meds make her so much worse. The weakness, can't sleep everything that bothers others. No one else in my family has had Parkinson, my mom is the only one that has had it. When she doesn't take the meds she gets better and can do for herself. The other morning, she got up and ate several pieces of wheat bread and the rest of the day she was out of it. Couldn't walk, think and other things that are similar to Parkinson. The more they up the meds the worse she gets. Recently they upped her levadopa/carp to 50/200 and she kept getting off balance and fell twice before the meds wore off.

Well, it is difficult to know what is caused by what but all those symptoms are found in Parkinsons.

Hello slogan67,

How do you know your mother is gluten intolerant? Has she been formally diagnosed? The systems you say she has, whatever they are, may have some other cause.

Hi Norton,

I don't know that she is gluten intolerate, I'm basing this on symptoms she has and the fact she eats alot of gluten type products.

Clearly your mother needs to pursue with her doctor the gluten intolerance she suspects she has with urgency to establish if her symptoms are caused by that. The urgency will have to come from her. It is not a good idea to just stop the parkinson medication intermittently and can be dangerous without proper supervision by her doctor/neurologist. In the meantime, have you and her read the book ,' wheat belly' by William Davis. It appears that she has not got through to her medics the symptoms and possible causes she suspects. Only she, and you, can do this!

You would be best getting your mum to consult her doctor on all these aspects.

Get it sorted out for the poor lady if she is having all these problems.

It could be her symptoms are aggravated by gluten intolerance and if so changing her diet will help but as is likely the symptoms are also from Parkinsons then unfortunately it will not take the symptoms away.

Has she discussed depression with her doctor. Probably about half or more people with PD suffer anxiety and depression at some stage.

As Norton says medication should be taken regularly not intermittently.

What are the problems that you suspect are due to gluten and how did she find out about it?

I agree with all the above comments. Perhaps after Christmas, have a go at an all elimination diet or see a proper dietary expert but be open to the possibility that pd is at the root of things. There are many gut symptoms with pd too.

Yes, what kind of problems? I have visceral 'off' when I don't take sinimet so I am on a low FODMAPs diet, which includes low gluten. Constipation is the first symptom of PD. If I eat the wrong foods, I'm in agony.

Thanks everyone! It's hard when your not the one experiencing the problems. Sometimes she doesn't know who I am so getting alot of good information out of her is hard. I have to base a lot on what I see going on and what she is complaining about. It's nice to have a place I have access to people who experience this awful disease. I want to try all natural things as much as I can because the meds even depression meds make her extremely crazy! I give her coconut oil daily and am having good results. She actually laughs and smiles occasionlly now. But I still give her meds like she is suppose to get. I have a doctor who is 70 yo and is doing wonders for her. It's just a very slow process. Again thank you!

There are no magic bullets in treatment for Parkinson's . Both my parents have it, neither has a family history, but both were involved with farming and were exposed to chemicals for years. Observation is important, but to attribute a cause to symptoms can lead to dangerous gaps in care. Please learn as much as possible about the mainstream science with this disease rather than grasping at straws popularized in the media.
