Hi Hilary, I'm on Azilect and it has a posted warning of high blood pressure side effects if you eat Fava beans while on Azilect.

I have heard that broad beans can help people with Parkinsons, but am not sure how much you would have to eat to get a result.

I'm on selegiline which also carries a warning against fava beans.

It appears to have been used as an answer to pd for years in India. On one site a nutiritionist said 4 oz every other day..just a normal portions worth. I dont know if you are on meds but you would have to ask your dr. I havent started any yet so maybe thinking of trying..start small and see if theres any difference.

Yes I used fava beans some time back now. Actually it is the pods that you use not the beans. It is hard work as you need to shell the beans then cook them then put them through a juicer! You have to be careful that the beans are organic and free from pesticides and you need a lot of beans!

It is also very hard to work out the amount needed for each dose. I gave up in the end as the preparation was taking over my life and I was not convinced about the benefits. Hope this is helpful. Tonyx

The nutritionist i read said the young beans ..4 ounces every other day. She said to adjust amount to find what works. That was general but im not on any meds so imagine youd have to be careful if you were and check with your dr first. Tried for first time yesterday so will let you know. Im still waiting to se uk neurologist.

They are extremely high in Tyramine, which causes major problems with MOA inhibitors, and to a lesser degree MOB. Azilect is an MOB inhibitor primarily if I remember right. Aged cheese and soysauce are also potential problems, though our neuro said that these are not problems with Azilect like they are with others. We use soy heavily, (Tofu and some soysauce and have never had problems, but we do avoid fava beans just in case, and aged cheeses. I don't have PD, but my 92 year old dad does. It's a mild form with no pain and virtually no stiffness, just shaking and slowness.

I dont understand Moa and Mob? What is tyramine? I read that broadbeans /fava beans are good for lots of aspects of health. Of course if you are on medication you have to be careful and k dr first.
