Lp(a) high. If you have high Lp(a), what are you doing about it?

Hi,

I got my Lp(a) test results back and it is 285 nmol/dl.

My questions:

1. How bad is it? How much risk does it add?

2. Anyone else with high Lp(a)? What are you doing about it?

Hi,

"Lp(a) are reported in different units, either mg/dL or nmol/L (the preferred unit of measure). Lp(a) values are categorized in 3 ranges:

Normal Lp(a) level: < 30 mg/dL, or < 75 nmol/L

Elevated Lp(a) level: 30-50 mg/dL, or 75-125 nmol/L

Very High Lp(a) level: > 50 mg/dL, or > 125 nmol/L "

I had mine tested at a research hospital, it came back very high. When discussing the results with the research doctor, the conclusion is that there is nothing to do about it, and this is an unknown risk factor, if it is a risk factor at all they do not fully understand. They are researching in an attempt to see if they can correlate it to cholesterol. So I am not doing anything about it, I do not take a statin and my cholesterol is in the normal range.

Thanks, yes it is elevated. As the above comment say, there is nothing you can do about this.

My view is just live normal healthy and happy life. There is no need for unnecessary testing of blood.

I’m currently waiting on the result of my LP(a) test. My lipid consultant described LP (a) as a lipoprotein that makes the “bad “ LDL cholesterol more sticky and likely to lead to premature atherosclerosis. I’m 52 and had a heart attack at 51. My cholesterol levels were raised, but not alarmingly so and I wasn’t on statins. I now take a cocktail of medications but even the max dose of statin + Ezetimibe hasn’t got my LDL cholesterol down (plus of course improved diet and exercise) which is why I’m being tested for LP(a) and Familial Cholesterolemia. As far as I am aware, there is no treatment currently for raised LP(a) levels. There are a few useful videos on YouTube but there are very technical and difficult to understand.

May i ask what your raised cholesterol levels were at?

Of course! My total cholesterol was 7.2 at the time but LDL was 5.29. Both figures now much lower but still not at the target.

Thanks! just a bit curious since i am overweight myself and the chol values have been a bit elevated. on the other hand i guess the highest number i have seen is a total chol of 5.9 so maybe not super bad.

Mine was 7.2 TC and 5.2 LDL. I had an nstemi in dec 2020. My Lp(a) is 136 nmol. My LDL is now 1.4 and Apob 0.69. I take 30mg atorvastatin and 10 mg Ezetimibe. Weird dose of statin but I’ve played around with them and this mg works best.

Nstemi is a type of heart attack. A partial block. Basically I had 2 days of heart attacks until I called emergency services. My biggest regret.

Hi all,

I looked up what drugs are being tested for Lp(a) reduction and found Olpasiran from Amgen.

In US they are looking for individuals to join the Phase 3 trial and I signed up for it. I just did blood draws for it. I have a 50% chance of getting the drug Olpasiran or placebo.

They may be looking for folks in Europe too.
