How's everything going today for you?
I have my Covid-19 test tomorrow before my planned operation on Thursday. In quite some pain. Had a problem with my left foot swelling up over the weekend, clearly bigger than my right and painful too. I managed to get infection on the knuckle of one of my toes (middle) and I think it was spreading up my foot and into my leg. Our son has brought a bug into the house so now, my wife and I are ill, perfect on the week of the op! Apart from all of that, I'm doing ok. How about you?
I'm sorry to hear that you have an infected toe/foot/leg. Are you able to still get the vaccine as scheduled? Did you talk to the doctor/nurse about the infection? Please let us know how you feel after the medication has been used for a few days. Get some rest and put your foot up on a pillow to help the swelling. Hope you feel better soon.
I'm okay, but been a little busy over the weekend.
😕 Well, I kind of didn't got to the doctors about my toe, which as a diabetic, is pretty stupid. I was busy at work and having to take the day off on Thursday for the op, have been chasing my tail to keep things in order. I know that we are very lucky in the UK with having free healthcare with our NHS and In have no excuse. 🥴
Yes, with having Diabetes, you have to be very careful when it comes to any type of infection. Infections can cause blood sugars to go too high or too low out of nowhere. What have your blood sugars been since you've had the infection and been put on medication? Some medications can raise the blood sugars, too, so that's another thing to keep an eye on and be aware of when figuring out why blood sugars can spike/drop. Same with when we have colds/flu-like symptoms.
My sugar levels have been odd, uncontrollable. I am on insulin (Humulin I) twice daily and Ozempic once a week. My HBa1C has been coming down but still too high at my 6 month review. It is a work in progress.
It's good to know that the A1c is slowly coming down. You may see a bump up in another 3-4 months if you get a new blood drawing done because this will show the infection and the higher numbers from it, unfortunately. When you do get another blood drawing done for it and you see the doctor, mention the infection so they know the reason for the raise from the last A1c result. Whenever I get a cold/sick/infection and I have to get my A1c done, at the next appointment, I always tell my doctor about why it may be higher. He understands and then tells me not to worry about it unless it goes higher again and I don't have any odd issues in the next few months from that appointment. I use Basaglar and Novolog. I'm type 1.
You're welcome! Do you eat a low carb. diet? I can send you a fake menu and how to count carbs. if you want me to help. For me, I eat a low carb. high protein diet and it helps control the blood sugars so they stay even during the day and evening hours. Of course, there's always a small blip now and then. Did the doctor suggest that you do low carb. dieting?
Funny thing is I have just got myself a Low Carb book from Diabetes UK and started yesterday. I really need to sit down and make a menu so it is easier to stick with. If you can help, I would be extremely grateful. Thank you.
