Flicking sound in ear

Hi, i have for the last two weeks been partially deaf in one ear. I went to a walj in centre and was told this was an ear infection. I was given amoxicillin and told it would clear in 3 days. That was over a week ago, i have now finished the course and the deafness is still there. In addition I am now experiencing a flicking/ beeping sound in the ear, every 15 seconds or so.

It is worrying me, i will get back to my GP eventually but there are no appointments for 3 days so I wonder if there are any tips. Thank you

Hi Teddy.

I think the advice for people experiencing a sudden onset change in their hearing is to go to Accident and Emergency at your local hospital. A sudden decline in your hearing needs to be investigated - most hospitals in large towns or cities should have the ability to call on an ENT surgeon to check things out for you.

The RNiD have a very helpful guide to what can happen to cause this change and what can done to help it: rnid.org.uk/information-and...

That must be very annoying. I think you need to make sure the medics investigate whether this is tinnitus in the usual sense or something else. I believe periodic clicking or fluttering noises can be caused by a twitching muscle in the ear. A few years ago, I had brief episodes of pressure in my right ear accompanied by partial hearing loss (low frequencies gone) as well as a more prolonged faint vibration. The hearing loss subsided after a few hours each time and the vibration after few weeks. Does yours seem like a physical vibration or only a sound? It is also worth finding out whether tinnitus is a side-effect of any medication you're on.

Thank you. It is possibly muscular. Seems to be particularly bad at night, or maybe thats just when i notice it.

Some people have said their ear flutters are brought on when lying down but whatever it is, it is likely to feel worse at night when all is quiet. Have you tried masking or distraction with a sound generator at your bedside?

I experienced hypercussis followed by SEVERE vibration for more than six months. Told had tinnitus / slight hearing loss but at age 58 at the time told go home and don’t focus on it. Also had intermittent clicking. The vibration, which I put down to vagal nerve, was the most debilitating along with acute sound sensitivity caused by Migraine maybe?

Update- went to A&E yesterday, delayed it but it wasn'tgoing away and I really didn't want to clog up casualty.

They have referred me to an ENT specialist

Ticking sound is still as bad as ever

futher update- seen specialist. Hearing has improved so he doesn't think its anything serious, but has suggested a scan. I don't think he took my ticking sound seriously, or thinks its a problem.

I guess the scan is the next step
