Is there an alternative to prophylactic Azithromycin?

Wondering if anyone is on a prophylactic dose of something other than Azithromycin? It has really helped reduce Bronchiectasis flare ups but doesn’t agree with my stomach!

Many thanks.

I have a rescue pack of Doxycline not opened yet in 12 months ! I've been doing 'lung gym" it has a posh title but can't remember it ! the local Respitory Team run it and it has helped a lot. x

Hi Dibola04

I have always taken co-trimoxazole. It doesn’t upset my stomach but does make my mouth sore. I think some doctors prefer doxycycline as a prophylactic. Hope you get sorted.

Azithromycin is one of the macrolide antibiotics. There are other drugs in the group. You need to discuss this with your respiratory doctor to see if an alternative can be prescribed. However, before you do that, perhaps you ought to check with your pharmacist because there might be ways of taking it that would minimise the discomfort.
