Recently every night my hands become incredibly itchy to the point of distraction.

I have liver cirrhosis, is this normal?

Many thanks

Hi Northlad, yes itching can be associated with cirrhosis.

However it may be be associated with other conditions. I also suffer from psoriasis which can cause intense itching. Before my diagnosis, I had a bout of intense itching on my shins which i naturally associated to my psoriasis. It wasn't until i received my diagnosis that I put two and two together. It resolved itself within a few weeks without any intervention other than a great deal of self control and resisting the temptation to scratch.

Various treatments are available to relieve the itching and you should discuss with your healthcare professional for your most appropriate pathway.

Good luck.

Due to my bilirubin being high, this has caused the itching all over me. It's getting better as I'm abstinent now. So bilirubin is coming down. I've been prescribed menthaderm aqueous cream that cools the skin for a while. It feels like ants under your skin, it's horrible. It will reduce/stop if you stop drinking and bilirubin comes down.

Thank you very much for this. I’m going to ask my GP about this as I’ve seen abstinent for 3 years.

Hey northlad my hands itch sometimes pretty bad and I’m going to chat with my specialist about it. I feel like it’s an allergy or something because when I take my otc allergy med it stops within 30 minutes. Really odd. I have heard of people itching all over which is typically associated with liver disease.
