Does anyone,in the context of compensated cirrhosis,what the platelets going up is indicative of?

A normal platelet count ranges from 150,000 to 450,000 platelets per microliter of blood. Having more than 450,000 platelets is a condition called thrombocytosis; having less than 150,000 is known as thrombocytopenia.

If yours are going up & have gotten to 135k then they are still on the low side but improved. So it's a good thing! My hubby sat at 20 at one point and needed platelet transfusions before procedures - last time we were told a score he was improved at 200k. His and your spleen are obviously not gobbling up platelets as much.

My last bloods showed "Platelet count - observation (42P..) 127 10^9/L [150 - 410]" - so last November mine were 127.

I'm having them done again tomorrow, I'll report back. Usually if I'm lucky get some of the results the same day, if not early next week.

When I've questioned why they fluctuate, I'm told not to worry, they will go up and down because of Cirrhosis. I have Dr Googled it and then worried like mad, but that was a year ago and I'm still here (unlucky for some 🤭) so panic not!

My last bloods my platelets were at 91000 but expected. They were lower before that 😳If they are coming up and within range then that’s a good sign x

That's strange I have compensated cirrhosis and my specialist in the US didn't even bring it up. I also don't need to take medicine which I'm learning is a great thing. Either that or she wants me to get more sick so she can make more money off me. 😂 Totally kidding, she works at a great facility. Now I have to decide to look them up for myself and potentially worry or just not look at them. Hmmmm. Best of luck to you all!

Hi pushthrough. Hope you are ok and belated wishes for 2022. Could you contact the Hospital you are attending and ask them to explain your blood results if you need to. Worry not, here in the UK many people go from decompensated Liver Disease to compensated. Drink plenty of water as it will flush the toxins from your Liver. Stay positive, we are all different including ...... GOOGLE!! Best wishes to you.

I would think, as our platelets climb, the risks of bleeds become less.

My doctor has said that if a patient does the right things for some patients test results can improve. There is hope, plenty of it. I would google "foods that increase platelet count" and "foods that decrease platelet amount" and eat accordingly unless advised to do otherwise by a doctor or dietician. Of course platelets can be up and down for other reasons, not just liver reasons.

Platelets are basically part of the bloods clotting agents, so too few makes blood less likely to clot. Well done on getting that score though, I'd say that's a good one, you are well on the way to being in range.

Thank you. They are going up every 6 months. 95k,125k and 135 over 18 months. So in the right direction.😊👍

Oh ok, so they test that using an INR test here in the states. I'm barely out of range so it still takes longer than normal to clot.

Hi 🙂 ..one is ok just wiped out. Fractured vertebrae x 3 (poss' more now) and bone density loss in my hip so I have a cool gangsta style limp now and again (Osteoporosis that is part and parcel of the old Cirrhosis) I just got cheesed off so decided to focus on making the most of physiotherapy to strengthen the muscles that support the bones. But as you know can't have much dairy/calcium because of Gallstones, so sourcing it by gathering and foraging for other twigs, nuts and berries, but Adacl D3 and the delightful Alendronic Acid. ~ Ooo I love that med' 😖 ~ are on the menu too. Not after sympathy btw..it just is what it is.

Anyway that is very boring 😄 How's things in your camp? Hoping all is good, sounds like you are doing really well. Woop Woop. 🥳

It's just one of them...keep going and stay positive My latest platelets are 111 (about 3 weeks ago), so they have gone down by 3 since January.

I'm told not to worry as they rise and fall because of Cirrhosis, the rest of my bloods seem to be plateauing, so traa laaa 🎺🎶😁

I will report back with my next vampire results soon. Mind you my INR was 1 ...BUT this last lot showed 1.2, so I'm guessing lower platelets higher INR? Possibly clotting is lesser.. not a lot or big deal, just a 'tinky tiny' bit.

They test platelets here too, they're usually on your cbc where your red and white blood cell counts and things like that are

I think that's slightly different though. I'd like to understand it more. My husband has low platelets caused by his liver disease, but he also has a portal vein thrombosis so has to have blood thinning drugs to manage that. They monitor both of these separately- from what I can make out, I think the platelets are the actual clotting agents and the INR measure the actual thickness of the blood???? I questioned how he could get a clot when he had deranged platelet count but apparently its not uncommon. You can imagine how messy a simple nose bleed can get though 🥴

I'm sorry to hear that Ewife! I had no idea how serious portal vein thrombosis was until my gastro doctor thought I had it after reviewing a MRI scan and freaked out. She sent me straight to the ER. Thankfully it was portal vein hypertension and not thrombosis. I'm very happy to hear he is able to have it managed with medication.

Reporting back ~ Well I didn't expect that. Mine are down from 127 to 113 😳 (minus the 0000'0s) hmm more dark greens for me I fancy.

I view mine on something called systemonline. I don't bother asking anymore as they tell me I worry too much and that it will fluctuate.

I can monitor what I eat, ie if potassium or sodium are up or down, less potassium foods or lower salt and decrease fluids if sodium is low. If that makes sense.

It just says "Full blood count Report. Satisfactory. No further action." I have Cholecystitis (Gallstone flare up as you prob' know) at the moment and on 'Co-amoxicalv' at the moment, it could be that. I have not been eating brilliantly, especially green stuff. However, I will investigate further, as I have dyplastic cells in my liver, which hopefully are shrinking and not turning nasty. But good news is my bilirubinnis the lowest it's been ever....

16 (below 21 is the range) woo hoo, no Maggie or Lisa Simpson skin colour in my camp!

I'll let you know what they say, I will ask, because it is a bit of a drop.

Yes I can!!! I’ve had them years(14 years undiagnosed,missed on US). Under the right rib,just under,around to the right lower back and up into the right shoulder....

Oh cripes..14 years blimey. That's a long old slog. I think myself lucky then. Mine were put down to muscular pain, possible fractured ribs. I've mentioned in another post I had to do my own homework, request scan results.

I know mine hurt, but I can't feel them moving around, or do you mean the pain moves around. I had the shoulder and back pain/ache. Started off like a pebble thrown into water, the ripples or waves of pain went outwards, in the upper middle of my back. - shoulder blades. That felt weird, kind of catches your breath too.

Is that what you mean, I'm imagining a Gallstone festi' with your description 😂

I am intrigued. So, it's the ache back/shoulder pain, do you ever have the massive pains, like contractions across the stomach, ending up in fetal position and hot water bottle and as many pain killers as you can get for 48 hrs desperate not to go to A&E (which they advise), do you get those?

Also I have near on 80% of the time just the dull ache, under the right side of lower ribs. Feels like it should be the liver, I take Buscopan for that, it helps enough.

Have they not offered to remove it?

Well I used to take painkillers but not now because of the liver. They cant operate on me because I have portal hypertension. Years ago it was agony ,not so much that bad now. Yes I’ve been in A&E but not interested when you drink. I have a damaged pancreas which suggests I’ve had pancreatitis before? Normal so sugars but high amylase levels. Severe pancreatitis ruled out as my liptase levels are normal. They were definitely missed on the US. My Dr mate said those Us are open to interpretation and it depends on the experience of the person doing it.i.e sonographer or consultant radiogist on a CT scan. It’s a bloomin minefield.

Bugger 😧 Not nice, yes it is a minefield. It's a bit like one of those grab machines at the arcade, sort of. 🥴😂

I am pretty much the same re Gallstone/bladder removal. A bleed was a high factor, so was/is the lining of GB sticking to the what's left of Liver. So keyhole surgery would end up me, being opened up and far more risky. Ring any bells?

I was Grade 'C' child Pugh, then B, now pretty much A and Compensated. But I'm not in any rush to go back into hospital with the situation at the moment.

Anyway, well done for not having pain killers, I can only have the tiniest dose of anything. I'm sure it's all mind over matter anyway.
