Question about INR.

Hey guys, how are u all doing, I hope as good as possible. Thanks for reading my post I hope somebody can clear up somethings...?

Back again, since being sober now for half a year. It's going well (i think), but two problems are on my mind. The first is sleeping, The first I've slept like there was no tomorrow, the last 4 months I can't get any real good sleep. I cannot sleep the whole night (im extremely awake at 2-3 am), but just can't sleep anymore. And If I sleep sometimes during the day, I can't get out of bed. This results now in a 3 hour sleep in the late afternoon. And a 2-3 hours of sleep somewhere at night. All together its making me sooooo tired. Anyway, I've read some stuf about this and sleeping problems could last for a year after quiting, so I just have to hang in there I guess. But it's really hard.

Secondly: My "sober" INR is 1.5. I know INR is higher when u have portal hypertension, but if I search on the internet, one site tells me a "normal" range is between 1.0 and 1.5, the other between 0.8 and 1.1. This worries me, can anybody inform me about this subject? And if so, how much too high is 1.5 if I would compare it with u guys? And will it go down again? This question for me is more important then the sleep thing.

Sorry for the long story, but it would be really appreciate it if someone could tell me something usefull here.

Thanks for reading my questions, and I wish u all a great day.

Grtz Jimmy!

Hello,

Best thing is not to look at the internet! Different labs have different normal ranges and this can be a bit confusing and worrying for patients. It is more about the trend of results and how it fits in with all the other blood tests. Might be worth having a talk with your GP or consultant for reassurance.

I have portal hypertension and my INR is only slightly above range for the lab here in the UK, and most of the time it has been in range, so I'm not sure where you got the idea that INR is higher with portal hypertension, but it certainly isn't the case for me and I have had it a few years now. INR measures the clotting time. If it is higher than is deemed normal, there are many reasons for this, including genetic causes. It is worth talking to your dr to find out what they think is behind it.

There are certain meds that will affect the INR, such as warfarin, so if you are taking those meds, that could be causing it. When I was first diagnosed with my autoimmune liver condition, I couldn't have a biopsy because the INR was too high and in the end I had to have a Vit K injection. I definitely didn't have portal hypertension then.

The fact that you have disturbed sleep and a prolonged clotting time is suggestive of your liver not functioning well. However, I have good liver function for what is left of it functioning, but my sleep pattern is atrocious. You need to go back to your dr and be honest about your lifestyle, so that they can start to help you better and explain what all these results mean for you. Alll the best :)
