Hi guys

Recently diagnosed with "early cirrhosis". On 50 mg of sertraline a day. Do i need to come off this immediately or can it wait for a few months?

Thanks

Zoloft is regarded as safe for most people with liver disease but there have been cases where it has caused liver damage in some people. People who were sensitive to it had markedly raised liver enzymes such as ALT and AST which returned to normal after going off the drug. If your blood test results are normal while taking Zoloft it may not be damaging your liver however cirrhosis is an unpleasant way to die. With that in mind the safest thing to do would be to taper down to avoid withdrawal symptoms and get off it as soon as possible in consultation with your doctor.

Presumably you were prescribed this drug due to depression. It's important you don't stop any meds without first discussing it with your Dr's. It is dangerous to stop an SSRi drug without proper medical advice.

All drugs should be used after consideration by you and your Dr of the risks verses the benefits. Depression can be just as dangerous as liver disease, so you should consider that as well.

I hope you are well enough physically and mentally for that plan to be made accordingly.

Best wishes, stay safe

Hi my wife had liver failier and had a transplant 3 years ago and is on 150mg of sertraline a day and has been for many years and it has caused her no problems at all all her hospital liver checks all come back okay

and even though 50mg is a low dose you have to be slowly taken off sertraline or it can cause other problems

Please do not suddenly stop taking any medications without firstly fully discussing with your doctor. No one on the forum is medically qualified to advise.

Your doctor really needs to be the one to make a clinical judgement.

Best wishes.
