There are many, many forum members who have AIH (Auto Immune Hepatitis). My husband has cirrhosis due to AIH - we are also members of an excellent Facebook support group page which has over 2000 members from around the world - all of whom either have AIH themselves or like me supporting a loved one with the condition. Group is supported by many of the top doctors in the UK who are experts in treating the condition or are involved in AIH research. You'll find us at:- facebook.com/groups/AIHorgUK/

I have had AIH for almost 9 years. I would suggest you join the Facebook support group as a way of meeting other people with the condition who will be able to answer any questions you may have. Take care.
Is your Auto Immune Hepatitis diagnosis a new one Mcharles? If you are new to AIH you might want a look at the British Liver Trust page about the condition.

I see you asking about causes - no one really knows what kicks off your immune system to go hay wire and start to attack your liver (and or other organs as once your immune system goes into overdrive it can start to attack all manner of other systems and many folks with AIH find they get 'crossover' conditions or multiple AI conditions).
There is research ongoing as to what 'triggers' an auto immune response. In some people its a previous illness, a medicine or other environmental chemical, in some the whole family seems to have AI issues. No one really knows. Yep it isn't alcohol related or viral or down to a lifestyle choice it is purely down to 'something' triggering an over active auto immune response where your own immune system suddenly starts attacking your own body cells/tissues.
If caught early enough the treatments are great at stopping the initial inflammation and then longer term, immune suppressants can tamp down your immune system and hopefully keep the condition under control.
All the best, Katie
Thank you very much katie
