It's best to try and get individualised dietary advice from a dietician who has your father's medical notes to hand. Little food and often is the general advice for advanced liver disease with protein and carbohydrates essential for fuelling and maintaining muscle and it might be easier for him to tolerate smaller food amounts rather than big meals. He should avoid salt as much as possible especially if he is suffering from fluid build up (you mention swollen abdomen and legs which I assume is ascites and oedema). It sounds like his medical team need to do further work to get him stable. Is he in hospital just now? He perhaps needs to be to get adequate care, minerals and vitamins - perhaps via a drip.
Wishing you both the best of luck.
Katie
Even if his liver disease isn’t alcohol driven he shouldn’t drink any. Foods: fruits. veggies, protein from chicken, fish, eggs and peanut butter. No salt. My husband is Stage IV Cirrhosis/NAFL & was diagnosed in 2015. With meds he is doing well. He is on disability because he gets too fatigued, turns grey & looks like he will pass out. So he gets a good nap every day. He is also diabetic so even more limitations but sugar is def not good for Cirrhosis either. His Dr. told him that he has seen patients that had Stage IV live as much as 10 years by eating right. He never has been a drinker and of course a lot of ppl hear Cirrhosis and assume it is the alcohol. He was pretty ill about 6 months prior to the diagnosis. Now feels better but has a different lifestyle for sure. The best scripts that have made a huge difference are the lactulose to remove ammonia/toxins from the liver & Xifaxin which is an expensive antibiotic, but helps with confusion. We had 2 ER trips and since the Xiafaxin about a year ago, none. I hope your dad is better soon. There is definitely hope if the right things are done. Brenda
