My partners first symptoms were swollen legs & ankles. First GP told him to slacken his belt on his trousers! Went on to develop all the nasties & needed a transplant 12 months later. Obviously drank too much but I think the levels of drink vary for each individual as to what damage it causes.
My first signs were shaking, sweating, diarrhea and confusion. Used to drink 6 - 12 beers a day and sometimes up to 2l of wine as well. My liver ALT test came back at around 4000, so im guessing i wasnt far from cirrhosis. This was going on for about 4 years before i got into rehab.
It's not how much you drink but how much your liver can cope with. There is no "safe" amount, and no definitely dangerous amount. Lots of people with serious alcohol problems do not develop cirrhosis. "Every day" seemed to be a turning statement. (It was 2-4 pints every day, and a bit more than that sometimes.)
In hindsight the symptoms were stomach problems, diarrhea, a good sun tan, sweating especially after eating, a lack of appetite, a loss of sex drive, a lack of energy or enthusiasm for anything, difficulty walking especially uphill, feeling less like drinking, swollen legs... I personally thought it was congestive heart failure and because the Liver Function Tests were only slightly raised the first Dr he saw diagnosed that but the heart specialist quickly said liver. (He did a couple of tests first.)
