It is a rather high GGT result, but I have seen many on here with much more elevated results.

If you cut back your drinking to within current guidelines and/or abstain, you should see your result lower to more acceptable levels within a few weeks.

I would however state that i am not medically qualified so as with any medical condition discuss any concerns you may have with a qualified person e.g. your GP

Hello 71an,

I had a similar reading of GGT 199 as a result of drinking too much alcohol, up from my last reading of 25 some five years previously. The doctor warned me to cut down on the alcohol, which I have done over the last nine months, and now have a current GGT reading of 58. Still above the guidelines but going in the right direction. I consider myself very fortunate to still be in a position to enable my liver to recover from the abuse I've dealt it over the years and fully intend to maintain a healthier lifestyle. I am sure that you, also, can achieve a reduction in GGT levels by cutting down, if not completely out, on the alcohol. Good luck in your journey to a healthier lifestyle!

My ggt was over 200 5mths ago due to Sepsis causing a massive flare up of my PBC and pneumonia. Came down to 50, now back up to 80, as still have had repeated infections in my left lung which are now clearing. Try and stay positive and try to counter-act what caused it to be raised in the 1st place,e.g cutting down/out alcohol or getting infections treated. The liver is such a vital organ that you need to do whatever you can to maintain it in full working order. Last October I was in the Freeman with the scary prospect of needing a transplant, luckily my liver responded to the water tablets, steroids and having 11 1/2lbs of acsitic fluid drained. Although I lost about 4 stone with the illness, my appetite is slowly coming back, finally managed to clear my plate today after my Mam cooked me a small portion of Sunday lunch. After not wanting to eat for months, I was so pleased with myself and I've had a home made fresh fruit salad tonight. Even did a few diy beauty treatments this afternoon, feels amazing and looking forward to getting back out for walks with my puppy this week. Good luck with getting your levels back to normal, look forward to a healthy future and if you have to cut down/stop drinking, go for it, take care x

Mines over double that-same reason. You can reduce it but it takes time. You need to cut down to below the 14 unit guidelines-start with 6 weeks off and see what happens.

Start one day at a time with a 30 day plan to not drink! If you can eat healthy that would be great? Drink plenty of water too.If you are interested in healing the body I found Antony William books very inspiring! My results more than halved in 4 months.. Wishing you well not afraid!

GGT is always used as an alcohol indicator, but it can be high due to other factors - at my husbands inquest the medical said GGT is definitively an alcohol test, so even though no indication of liver decomposition due to alcohol on.my hubby's death certificate it states he died due to alcohol!

If yours is high get it checked out, def get off alcohol as this will only exacerbate any existing issue you may have.

In my mind, having lost my hubby at the rope old age of 50, I'd say it's better to know and take action, than not to know....

Good luck and bless you xo

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.

It may be a good idea to make an appointment with your GP and have an open and honest conversation about your alcohol intake, they can then advise an alcohol reduction programme, if needed, and refer you on to the best services for help.

The GP can also advise you with regards to re testing your liver function tests and referral to a liver specialist, if appropriate, for further investigation.

If you need to talk, The British Liver Trust run a helpline Monday to Friday 10-3 or you can email us. Details of the contact information and all our support services can be found here, see link;

At my last blood test mine was 350, it has been highier in the past, its hard to say if I particularly feel any symptom related to that as an individual level.

If that level frightens you into drinking less then its a good thing in my book.
