A generic drug is a pharmaceutical drug that is equivalent to a brand-name product in dosage, strength, route of administration, quality, performance, and intended use. A generic drug is a chemically equivalent, lower-cost version of a brand-name drug, costing 30-80% less! A brand-name drug and its generic version must have the same active ingredient, dosage, safety, strength, usage directions, quality, performance and intended use.

Generic versions are fine as long as they are from a good company. The issue about India is quality control. How will one be sure that the generic one is giving is good enough; not just some cheaply priced drug compromising the effect. Of course, there are many standard companies which are perfectly fine. As a rule of the forum, I cannot name any company here as that would amount to directly endorsing or rejecting the company; but you can speak to your Oncologist and take a guidance as to which companies are good and take a generic version of same.

Just for your knowledge, the top most companies supplying branded medicines here, are the ones which supply generics in US. So you can imagine, you high end brand is what is generic in US. And the US FDA is a very strict authority. Most big companies have got warnings and everything; to ensure they produce quality. Do you think same thing is possible in India? Imagine that the big companies here are getting warnings to maintain quality, what will happen to so called generic manufacturers in India.

The government is out after branded medicines and in a way, its a good move. But it will remain a good move ONLY AND ONLY IF they can ensure quality production from companies making generics. If you take a generic pain killer and it doesn't act well, it will only make you a bit uncomfortable but will not affect life. But if a generic medicine for treating cancer doesn't act, You very well know what will happen.
