Alendronate

Anyone taking alendronate for osteoporosis? What has your experience been?

I started it last year, I had no trouble taking it and no gut problems but after taking it for four months I felt absolutely awful. Bone pains, sinus pains, swollen glands in face and neck and by the time I had terrible toothache in all of my teeth, upper and lower on both sides I’d had enough, I felt weak and old and very tired all the time, not at all like my former self. I was also worried because I had so little energy that I wasn’t feeling like exercising which I needed to do for my bones.

I stopped for a break intending starting again but my husband said he couldn’t understand why I wanted to recommence something that was making me feel so ill that I didn’t. So I’m taking my chances without the alendronic acid, I take bone friendly vitamins and minerals, eat bone friendly foods and get lots of weight bearing exercise. I know there are lots of people out there taking alendronic and who are quite happy with it so my version is just one side of the coin.

I took it for over 4 years. No side effects whatsoever but no improvement in bone density. I am now on Forsteo and am suffering lots of side effects.

I did not continue with it as it made my acid reflux worse, but have friends who have taken it for years without any problems. Hope you are the same
