If you have early signs of lung damage between the ages of <25 to 40 years of age ask your Dr to test for Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, this is the only genetic condition that causes early Emphysema and destruction of lung tissue.

Good advice Margs I agree,

I was diagnosed with it but the specialist and doctor more or less dismissed it probably because they don't treat it. I am not sure that it has made any difference to me knowing I have Bronchiectatsis and found that out after being treated for Sinusitis for ages. They found the Alpha 1 thing at the same time as they don't routinely test for it apparently.I was being tested by a tropical disease specialist at the time heaven knows why I think they couldn't think of any where else to send me!

I had this test just in case, as it is hereditary, so my children could have been at risk and knowing early could have helped them. Thankfully, it proved negative, so they are not at that increased risk .

My doctor has said she would do the test, but if it comes back positive it will affect my travel insurance etc so sometimes its best not to have it on your records .She said the best thing i can do is not smoke ,which i dont, and if i start showing any signs to then have the test .

Cannot understand why it is not common practice that all people with serious lung problems are tested for this at the same time ?
